Roon was running fine and then I asked it to search for Clifford Brown. Roon crashed. Tried restarting roon. Got as far as roon saying it was searching for Clifford Brown when it crashed. Rebooted computer. Restarted roon. Got as far as roon saying it was searching for Clifford Brown when it crashed yet again. It appears roon wants to search for Clifford Brown when it starts. How do I keep it from doing that?

I suspect the specific search isn’t the reason for the crash. What happens when you try another search?
Please provide some more detail, e.g., version of Roon, number of tracks, whether they are local or streaming, and where your music is stored.
Also, please confirm the time of your last successful backup.
Because roon won’t completely start i can’t get much of that information exactly. i know the version of roon when it first happened was an early access version (nn57?). I did in desperation download the version currently available at roonlabs.com. it crashed as well. All tracks are local and are stored on an SSD. Another music player indicates some 64000 tracks but i don’t know if all these are in roon but the number is around that. The last roon backup appears to have been on April 22.
I can’t try another search because roon crashes before it gets far enough to permit any entry.
This is a very weired problem Roon is having when a user enters specific characters (different ones for different users) in the Search field.
The problem is that Roon remembers the search and wants to go back to the state where it was before being stopped.
There’s 2 things you can try:
Be extremely quick during the startup process and try to select any other tab (Home screen, …), whatever you see/expect first.
You have a fraction of a second to do this (personal experience).
this is just an estimated guess, but what if you try with another Roon remote to bring Roon into another state?
After trying several things, none of which worked, I just deleted roon, application, settings & database. Then reinstalled roon and restored from backup which was just a day old. Everything seems to be working though I lost some play counts, but I can live with that. Thanks for the advice.
