Does the issue happen with local library music, streaming service music, or both?
· *Both streaming and local* *library* music are affected.
Do you encounter any playback errors with the "System Output" Zone?
· The System Output has the same problem as my other Zone.
Do you have a complex network setup?
· Both the device and RoonServer are connecting to a *single router*
Please try rebooting your router.
· No, I'm still having trouble
Do you have an approximate timestamp of when the issue last occurred?
· 11/20/25, 20:25
What are the make and model of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?
· PC W11 (latest) running Roon and feeding a Theta Casablanca V HT processor.
Describe the issue
Roon gives the "Nothing playing" error, and nothing I can do seems to fix that. I have rebooted the PC and network switch (though using HDMI input to a processor), reset exclusive for my zone, started and stopped Roon Server, etc. JRiver plays the same files just fine, as does the Qobuz app. Advice?
Describe your network setup
Cable modem, 8 port switch, with the PC on the switch. Wired.
Thanks for reaching out. It sounds like System Output (your PC’s internal speakers) also has the same issue as the Theta zone? Or were you trying to play to System Output and routing the system output still to the Theta zone? Some zones require multichannel output, I wonder if you zone is like that. You can go try to right click the zone name in the bottom right of Roon → Device Setup → Advanced → Send stereo content as multichannel to see if this helps. Let us know!
Afraid I don’t understand. My PC has no internal speakers. However, there is a system output device in Roon. It is separate from Theta. I thought that meant Roon should select whichever output is active on the PC? I was not routing system output to anything, at least not knowingly.
I tried all permutations of the device setup for the Theta zone without any luck.
Strange thing is Roon was working. It stopped yesterday for no reason I can determine. Now, nothing seems to make it work, Why would JRiver and Qobuz work?
Still having this issue. Roon started to play again on System Output. Then I tried HQPlayer once more. Silly me. Back to nothing playing on Roon and absolutely nothing fixes it. Roon works fine with my network DAC, and every other program on the PC plays fine through the Theta. Something is messed up between Roon and the Theta HT processor default device (NVidia High Definition Audio) on the PC. This status seems to be triggered by HQPlayer, and is not reset when HQPlayer is removed.
Still no reply from support. Found a fix, though no idea if it will last
Go into system output properties. Recycling exclusive and trying formats is ineffective. However, the reset defaults button did cause Roon to play again.
I am about ready to give up on Roon. It seems unable to play nice in a system that includes a multipurpose PC and a HT processor connected to that PC. It seems to work well when connected to a Roon end point DAC, but that’s only part of what I want.
When playing music from the DAC in the Theta processor, I am getting the nothing playing and too many errors messages. I reported that hitting the defaults button under the sound device advanced properties makes Roon work - and it does - but not in a good way. The reason it works is that it resets the system output from multichannel to stereo (the default mode). As soon as I set 7.1 again, Roon is gone. Only Roon does this. EVERY other streamer I have works just fine, playing two channel stereo via a system output (NVidia 3090 for me) that is configured for multichannel. I can’t be changing sound card configuration every time I want to play a tune. Is there a real solution or is this “You can’t get there from here”?
Before you do so, can you please reproduce the issue one more time and let us know the exact time stamp (time + date) of when does the problem happen ?
Never mind. I found a solution. Turns out, Roon does not query the OS to know what speaker configuration I am running. It assumes I have stereo. This may just be a problem with my specific collection of hardware, but NVidia high def output is a pretty common system output so I am puzzled.
The solution is to set your specific multichannel configuration in the advanced section of zone setup. Then it works.
That’s great news — we’re glad to hear you’ve found the solution.
To clarify, Roon relies on the information provided by the audio driver for each output device. If the device doesn’t accurately report its active speaker layout to the OS, Roon cannot automatically detect the multichannel configuration. That’s why the manual override exists under Device Setup → Advanced — exactly for cases like yours where the HDMI/AVR/processor path doesn’t fully expose its capabilities to the operating system.
Setting the correct multichannel layout there is the right approach, and it explains why other apps behaved differently — not all software queries or handles device capabilities in the same way.
We’re happy things are working now, so we’ll go ahead and close the thread.
