i am hoping to set up a watch folder so that my core “looks” at my laptop music files
Keep in mind, that it is always better to have the music local to the core. Roon will stream the music from the network source, to the Core, process it to PCM and then send it out to the endpoint. Adding network hops in the process can cause dropouts.
