Roon doesnt offer PC audio device when trying to play from Synology Roon core

Roon Core Machine

Roon Core Synology DS920+ running perfectly ok including ARC streaming to phone

Networking Gear & Setup Details

Ethernet connection no VPN. D-Link router that is acting as repeater in same network that sees other devices in network see above.

Connected Audio Devices

USB SoundBlasterX G5 external connected.

Description of Issue

Audio is connected externally via usb - SoundBlasterC G5 (if my roon core was installed previously on PC then output device was visible).
I tried also disabling ESET Internet protection everything even firewall, that didnt help
PC: Win11, AMD 5800X, 32GB all updates done.

When i launch Roon on PC i can only choose network devices that are all in same network as PC but i cant see any PC audio output device.

Hey @Meelis_Aidla,

You have my sincerest apologies for the delayed response here, we’ve been dealing with a higher-than-usual volume following our release and we’re working as quickly as we can to get back to everyone.

Following up on this thread, are you still running into issues getting your system output to play audio? If so, can you share a screenshot of your PC system sound settings?

With that, I’d also love to see a screenshot of your output selection on your roon remote screen (bottom right-hand corner of the app, to the left of your volume icon) please click the speaker icon to see what options you have :+1:

Hi. Yes i still have this problem.
Here are screenshots. Hopefully what You asked. Clicking speaker icon shows the integrated amp setting only thou.

I even tried to use windows own driver update, it installed older Soundblaster driver but issue didnt go away. So i’m confident its the Roon app issue that doesnt see G5 sound device. Playing from Tidal app directly sees PC sound device.
Here is older driver i tried also.

Hey @Meelis_Aidla,

From the screenshots you’ve provided, it appears as though the SoundBlasterC G5’s are acting as the soundcard for your PC. What happens if you disable them and unplug them from the USB port on the PC? Do you see any options for system output after that?

It’s odd to me that even under your system sound preferences, there is no system output option displayed.

Hey @benjamin

SB G5 is actually sound card device its just external version via USB not the pcie version. I tried also disabling and unplugging G5 and enabled PC internal realtek sound device. It seems same issue, Roon cant see device even its working and sound is working elsewhere in windows or games/other software.
It seems when i disable all output devices on PC it doesnt change nothing. Roon app wont change in that regard. My assuption is that, something is wrong with app not able to see any PC output whatsoever.

Roon app just doesnt see any sound device from PC.
Tidal example sees PC internal device fine same as was with G5.

Tidal shows system as well RealtekHD

Latest version installed.

And all sound devices enabled. Tidal app shows sound.

If your PC’s devices are not being seen, I would start by disabling the firewall on the PC and see if they appear. If they do then you need to enable exceptions for Roon, RAATServer, in the PC Firewall software.

Thanks for pointing that out. I did try disable ESET av protection but it seems firewall is separate and i didnt see those messages. I went for interactive mode to ask every action that goes on in network. Then i saw RAAT and Roon asking permission. Its really odd that Roon services are high level that needs network permissions compared to other music apps. At least its now fixed i have to make exclusions for roon now not to get annoying with permission popups.

Thanks for help.
