Describe the issue
roon is slow lately in many things like searching, loading albums, showing artwork,...
Describe your network setup
main isp fritzbox router with wifi, added asus wifi router connected to rock
maybe i should have explained better, my set-up has not changed. it has been working for years. the slowness appeared in the last months, it has been worse.
Thank you for the additional context. It is completely understandable to be puzzled when a network setup that has run flawlessly for years suddenly starts to drag. Even when you haven’t changed anything locally, background router firmware updates, ISP routing changes, or DNS relay degradation can shift things under the hood.
We were able to review your server’s diagnostic logs, and they show exactly why you are experiencing this lag. When your ROCK attempts to communicate with Roon’s cloud servers (to search, fetch metadata, or load images), the requests are taking over 2,000 milliseconds (2+ seconds) to return. This type of severe latency points directly to a network routing or DNS resolution bottleneck between the ROCK and the outside world.
To help us narrow down exactly where this bottleneck is happening, please try the following steps:
1. Bypass the Asus Router
Even if the Asus is configured to reside on the same 192.168.1.x subnet, it may still be applying its own firewall rules, traffic shaping, or suffering from a failing switch port.
As a temporary test, please unplug your ROCK from the Asus router and plug it directly into the main Fritzbox router.
See if the search and loading speeds instantly improve.
2. Set DNS Directly on the ROCK
You mentioned changing the router's DNS, but often routers will still intercept these requests. Let's bypass the router's DNS relay entirely.
Access the ROCK Web Administration Interface via your web browser.
Under the Network section, change your setup from DHCP to Static IP.
Enter your current IP details, but set the DNS Server explicitly to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8).
Save the settings and restart the ROCK.
3. Disable IPv6 on the Fritzbox
Fritzbox routers are notorious for handling IPv6 routing in a way that causes extreme latency with Roon's cloud services, as the system repeatedly tries to resolve an IPv6 address, fails, and slowly falls back to IPv4.
Log into your Fritzbox administration page.
Navigate to Internet > Account Information > IPv6 (or similar, depending on your firmware).
Completely disable IPv6 support so the network runs strictly on IPv4.
Please give these a try one by one, and let us know if any of them clear up the sluggishness!
Hello, thanks for the reply.
Suprisingly today Roon seems to behave differently. Much snappier, night and day difference. I have not changed anything yet.
Do you see any differences on your end?
point 2: rock was already setup with a static ip and dns to cloudflare.
I’m glad to hear things have improved for you! There haven’t been any changes on our end, so certainly let us know how the next few days go. Thank you!
