Roon Extension : RHEOS 2-way control & 192Hz/24bit Playback and Grouping on Denon/Marantz HEOS devices now in Extension Manager

Thanks Patrick.

Please try resetting the source controls - choose defaults and then Main Zone and Zone 2.

Have pulled the image while I sort out an issue I found where if Heos not selected I keep switching off the AVR.

Volume works fine with my AVR - what model is yours?

I may add some logging to check it responds to the same commands …

Hello Peter,
I have Rheos running on my synology through container manager. It works fine. I can see the RHEOS extension on Roon but it is running version 0.7.1-0
I have got the image directly from a research on Container Manager but it looks like 0.7.1-0 is the latest available. Do you know which file I have to download from GitHub ? In the LINVALE/RHEOS repository for 0.8.2-2, I can see app.mjs / package.json / package-lock.jason but I don’t know which file to use or even if I can process this way ? I would like to try how AVR Zone Control have been improved. Thank you very much for your help. Best regards

Hi Alexis

Happy to help .

The new version is still in test phase. I will come back when we have something I am comfortable having more broadly tested - unless you are wanting to help me debug!

The GitHub version can be installed directly - I keep this in sync with docker test images.

hi @peter_richardson that sounds like a wonderful extension and is probably exactly what I would need if I start my roon experience.

zu understand my questions. I’ve set up a synology ds918+ (which cannot be used to my knowledge) incl a docker image with step by step fur complete dummies explanation. I’m not able to change anything on that. if something crashes I’m lost…

I have 2 year old nuc with w7 I’m sure I could use for roon.

I have absolut no intention to do another docker image either on synology or windows.

I believe technology should make my life easier (roon! instead of working with music library manager like music bee or media monkey every second night…). and usubality is very important for me. even if I have medium set up here I’m not so audiophile. it just has to work.

pls excuse some probably stupid questions in advance, would be great if you could share your thoughts.

I’ve read here and most of it sounds like I should run away directly

  1. can I just install roon, install something called extension manager? exe file? and your extension manager (how?) without throwing something out of the windows
only because I don’t really know Linux distributions I would stay on windows for roon server

  2. copy my 400 gig music on roon and let it handle all folders and files from there on?

  3. stream music to several heos devices like the x4800h and some 150er within let’s say 30 min (not included time roon works with the initial library management of course)…

  4. don’t have to do something about updates, pgid, folder mapping, 1000 questions in the forum I would surely have if anything is unclear or deeper it knowledge is required …

if all yes, I would be happy to pay something for your solution. I don’t think everything should be free and your solution sounds like a lot of work (and should maybe anyway included in the already very expensive roon solution?)

if no I whish you all the best and a lot of fun with your project!! but I don’t think I can user anymore nights for customization…

I think you are asking how to make this as simple as possible.

My recommendation is to look at an extension manager set up. And work from there. RHEOS will be available and update wit new releases.

The simplest way to run this is with a raspberry pi, small cost and will give you access to other extensions Installation · TheAppgineer/roon-extension-manager Wiki · GitHub. To make it even easier you can purchase RooExtend (https://www.rooextend.com/) which gives access to all extensions.

You could even use the NUC to run DietPi which would shield you from much of the linux challenges - but its probably overkill.

Others may help you with how to install on the SYNOLOGY NAS alongside the existing docker image.

thanks!! that was fast!!

as I’m only understanding a third of it I guess roon plus extension is nothing for me. :frowning: :weary:

my ideas was to use the nuc directly but with your answer it seems Windows is not a option for the server?.. and also not for the extension manager… and the extension has to run on another instance than the server? not sure I get that.

as nice as these pi’s are I will never touch one in this life. I’ve 3 successful study paths but electronic or programming is not one of them.
didn’t know that there’s a box to buy for the extensions, thought it’s only software.

seems I have to read a lot more or hire an engineer… for me all that sounds like roon is scaring off 99.5 of potential customers? I’m technically interested and grow up with pcs for 25 years but that’s out of my league

thanks!!

Windows is fine for Roon server but if you want to use community extensions then you need to use Docker on it. Most extensions are designed to run on Linux as they utilise a lot of opensource software under the hood installing via docker will install all this for you. You can run docker on Windows and then install the Roon Extension Manager Docker image and then any other extension after that thats avalable via Extension Mangager (most of best ones are). If you not famiiar with Docker then Google is your friend.

thanks!! understood!! not sure if I’m up for another docker. you have no idea about my latest struggles with it on the nas
but thanks!! will sleep about it and maybe try some day nuc is anyway not in use currently. thanks all!

Hello @_supermood …I will try to post a nas container script here in the next few days…it will be for roon as docker and rheos as docker for synology nas…it’s really easy if you don’t have a complex network…the extension manager is a bit more work on synology nas due to access

Re thanks!! I will def try to understand it! but I’m already getting a headache…

roon core on synology is not possible to my understanding with my 918+ Celeron and 300 gig music. would be best of course but I thought not enough power.

I would even buy 2 devices from roon directly to have no stress but I don’t see it. that kind of energy consumption to have music in our little place here would be crazy I can not support to buy and run something for every little nano functionaility. I have a nas and then additionally the nuc running every day only for music would be somehow stupid I think. but additional 2 not 1 device, just for a high quality heos interface…
really that’s not technology should make things easier approach I have in mind here …

Thanks!

Is there any particular configuration for Raspberry?

I’m running on a Raspberry 4 and just installed the latest DietPi instance. From there, follow the menus to install the Appgineer app and then install RHEOS from Roon extensions. Very easy!

Thanks for all the help. and pointer’s here. This makes this such a fun project to work with you all on.

why not just try to run two Containers on your NAS. You can stop them at any time.

you can actually use the UI in Container Manager (synology’s version of Docker) to have it install the Roon Server - attach it to the host network.

For Peter’s image, I think I posted screenshots a while back showing the install… RHEOS doesnt take any resources, its Roon that you need to test…

So, install Roon as a docker image and run for a bit (use airplay2) and see if it kills your NAS.

as for energy costs - what the heck is your kwh rates to worry about a NAS?

@peter_richardson did you pull the TEST image - I accidentally told my system to repull from docker and …its not there

Just loaded a new test image. Squished the bug…

Let me know how you make out.

Thanks for your help as always!

Peter

Got a new Model 40n finally, what a hassle it was to get a replacement they could not repair my one at all.

Anyway I have a request @peter_richardson when you get the time. I know the LMS2UPnP plugin has an option to set the ip of the server to connect to, would it be possible to add this as an option please?. I tend to run LMS as a backup server to Roon but the plugin will connect to the first LMS instance it finds and this isnt my Roon core. So to be able to set it to connect to a set ip would be great

Thanks
Simon

I’ll take a look. Also I’m going to see if I can identify this type of amp as having a physical volume controls that should solve the remote issue you reported. Will need your feedback but I think you are using this through extension manager - so will be in a latest release rather than in test.

Yes I am using extension manager. Volume is ok in latest version the main sticking point is when using a he physical remote control for play pause it breaks Roon. It will pause the music but you can’t resume play and it doesn’t seem to tell Roon properly to pause as it’s playing in Roon but there isn’t any output . Signal path in Roon is still active and won’t resume again. You have to go into Roon and pause wait for signal path to go off then start from Roon.

Ok - thanks for that info.

Will see if there’s any work around if I can replicate with a different AVR.
