Roon fails to complete library scan and keeps attempting to log in to server (ref#IQDASJ)

Describe the issue

I have started scanning my library. almost 18TB, and roon had indexed almost 70% of the library and now it just keeps attempting to login to the server and never goes any further

Describe your network setup

I am using a netgear router and my roon is installed on mac mini 2018 with a 18TB harddisk connected to it.

Some more screenshots to help understand better.

additional info:

no anti-virus software is running
no software installed on mac as this is dedicated for music only

Roon worked fine for 2 days while it kept itself busy indexing my database and then 12 hours ago at almost 70% tracks indexed [375k out of 530k odd] it just started misbehaving… was able to connect my NAD M10 via LAN to play music for 2 days and now nothing is happening…

it has started working now… frustrating. shall keep everyone posted how this goes.

or 18TB - which ?

18 TB is one load of music (3000 albums / tb = 50,000 albums ???) what is the content , if it’s obscure in some way Roon may struggle to ID and slow down when re-trying. also it seems “Various Artists”, compilations will cause issues where an album isn’t allocated to a specific artist.

It may pay to split your library folder into several smaller ones and import one at a time doing conventional albums first.

Try a reboot when it stalls , it may have stuck on an odd file

Don’t try to use Roon while importing such a big library

Set the max number of cores Settings >Library> Background analysis before you leave it (say overnight) , when you want to use Roon set it back to a low number.

thank you. sensible tip!! looks like almost all done with 11k pending… phew!! and I agree it is perhaps the various artists / compilations that are heavy and obscure albums / and bootlegs or vinyl rips which are not standard in room database as well.

Hey @Arvind_Mohindra,

Thanks for writing in, and I’m glad to hear things are functioning properly for you now.

In your case, with 530k tracks (an impressive library!), this will undoubtedly put some weight on your servers performance. And while we definitely appreciate proper file organization, if the local files are not associated with a distributor or have an official release, Roon won’t be able to recognize them.

Our team is still investigating these performance issues tied to larger libraries with unidentifiable content, but I do want to note that Roon wasn’t ever built to be a file management system to handle large amounts of non-identifiable tracks.

thanks Benjamin. all is good for now.

last question - I have ordered a brand new souped up Mac Mini M2 Pro with 16GB RAM which is the latest. As I migrate from Mac Mini 2018 8GB RAM which is definitely under specs for a library of this size to the newer Mac Mini M2 Pro 16GB, would I need to rescan everything or will the room function properly as my other software on Mac when one migrates…

thanks
