Roon doesn't recognize devices after the last firmware update. Roon core is running on my Mac Mini. My other devices are running on my Macbook Pro (the laptop itself, and my Focal Arche headphone amp). They worked and were recognized in Roon "Audio". My Macbook Pro does recognize these devices, but Roon no longer does.
It’s not good but considering the widespread issues with the new lockdowns in macOS 15 I don’t find it totally surprising. The update installed new Roon program files, and I guess somehow macOS regarded this as new software and needed a reconfirmation. It’s probably a mistake somewhere (otherwise one would think that it at least pops up a notification) but conceivable.
At work, we are a software developer, we also struggle with new security popups and sometimes getting stuck because something got silently blocked, for things our software has done for years without problem. What makes it difficult is that none of this happened with any Beta versions of Sequoia, and then Apple made big changes in the release candidate and the final release. I’m a usually happy Apple user and it’s good that they take security seriously, but they messed up this release a bit.
I spoke too soon. Although my Focal Arche now shows up and I can select it, Roon is doing something bizarre. In the Album view where it shows the Tracks playing, the little EQ bar beside the name of the song shows that the song is playing. However, it plays for about 30 secs and then skips to the next song. But, on the bottom bar, where it shows the progress, it shows that it is not progressing, although the presence of the pause button suggests it is playing. Nothing is coming out of my headphones, even though I have the Volume cranked. I tried repeating your last instructions, as well as re-started Roon several times, but the problem continues.
Bizarre, but might be a different problem - I guess this one might have always been lurking but couldn’t have happened previously, as long as macOS blocked the communication completely. This is a new one to me (while the Local Network setting issue has happened a lot since the Sequoia release). Let’s see what support has to say.
Can you double-check the firmware on the Focal and ensure it’s up to date?
Lets also confirm the Focals playback settings:
Navigate to Settings > Audio in Roon.
Locate the Focal Arche and access Device Setup
Under the Advanced section, configure the maximum supported bit depth and sample rate for the Arche.
Have you tested any DSP to upsample or downsample track formats?
Lastly, lets see if refreshing your RAATServer may help. You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:
Hi Benjamin: I went to that section under Audio, but couldn’t find anything on bit depth or sample rate. So, I tried something I do on another machine, when it fails. It tells me to unplug the accessory, wait a few seconds, and then plug the accessory back in. I did that with the Arche, after it was turned off. I also shut down Roon and the computer. I then re-attached the cords, rebooted and turned Roon on again. This time it worked for a while. Then Roon told me it “Failed to initialized the device.” So, I turned Roon off, unplugged and re-plugged-in the cables again. Now it works again!
Should I hold back on trying to make any further changes to see if this setup continues to work?
Hi, Benjamin and Suedkiez: it looks like there is a handshake problem with the Arche, since my iFi Dac and amp work just fine. There also appear to be a lot of disgruntled owners of the Arche online. And I’ve had no luck in getting any response from Focal about my issues with the Arche. So, I’m dropping the attempt and using the iFi, at least for now.
