Roon fails to start after extended travel, showing 'Waiting for Roon to start' message (ref#LIAA69)

What’s happening?

· I'm having trouble connecting to Roon

What type of connection issue?

· Something else

Describe the issue

I travel quite a lot and each time I return after a trip of 3 weeks plus Roon fails to start. Yet again I am getting the error message 'Waiting for Roon to start - Your Roon server doesn't appear to be running'

I should that I have a backup but I want to understand why this keeps happening and what I can do to prevent it happening in the future

Describe your network setup

My core is my PC which was shut down before I went away. I was using Roon the day before I went away and it was working perfectly and now, the day I return it, it isn’t

Hi @Tim_Emptage,
Thanks for reaching out to us about this issue. Sometimes this can happen if there are two instances of Roon server running. Usually restarting your computer will fix this. Please give that a try and let us know if you still have this issue.

This can also happen when the Roon client starts up and is looking for the Roon server before the Roon server is fully up and running. If you set Roon server to Launch at startup and give it a minute after startup before clicking on Roon, the client, it should not happen.

Many Thanks Jim and Daniel. I have tried both those suggestions but sadly neither worked. It is now in the start menu but I get the same result.

I am about to go away for a few days but will be back next week and will pick it up then but in the meantime any other suggestions will be gratefully received.

When you restart , are you also restarting your network from scratch too ?

If so as @Jim_F says WAIT . Allow a minute or so for the modem and router to startup and get a stable internet connection ,then restart the Roon instance. Roon needs to connect with “mothership” failure to do so give the error you are getting !!

I am starting the PC from scratch without touching the router

Do you have Roon server set to Launch at startup? I assume you know there are two Roon programs on your computer, Roon server and Roon client. Make sure Roon server is up and running before starting Roon client.

Hey @Tim_Emptage,

Thanks for the follow-up!

I’d also double-check your Windows firewall, and make sure that Roon is listed as a proper exception - you can learn more about that here:

An easy way to test this is to temporarily disable your Windows firewall and see if the same issue occurs.

Can you be more specific in how you close down Roon before you leave for a trip? That may help paint a clearer picture into the issues that arise upon your return.

It may be worth it to refresh your Roon Server database, and perform a backup as you’ve mentioned above:

Let’s try a fresh database and see if your issues persist:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon + RoonServer (from taskbar area)
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon Server” and “Roon”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old” and “Roon” to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Here is the process outlined from a Windows machine:

All Roon_old on Windows

I have tried all the suggestions except reinstalling Roon.

When I switch off I don’t specifically close down Roon. I close things like Office etc but not Roon.

I suppose I now have to reinstall. Already have a backup which I save each day. Do I still need to follow the instructions from Benjamin as they are ?

Hey @Tim_Emptage,

Thanks for the additional info!

Got it, so you typically leave Roon Server running? Do you ever use Arc when you’re traveling?

Yes, I do think that’ll be a good next step.

We’ll be on standby for your reply. Thanks!

I have managed to rename Roon to Roon_old but each time I try to rename RoonServer I get the message that it, or a program in it is still open. I have removed it from the task bar and I can’t see where it is open. It is not showing in the hidden icons on the bottom right. Any suggestions please ?

You don’t remove it from the task bar, you go there to shut down Roon server by Right click - Quit. Did you try Ctrl - Alt - Delete and shut down Roon Server in Task Manager?

Hi @Tim_Emptage,
We’d like to take a look at the database you are using to do some tests ourselves. Can you please use the steps below to share it with us?

  1. Zip up your RoonBackups folder (right-click it and select “Compress…”):
  2. Submit the .zip file to us through our Database Corruption Issues portal
Thanks you in advance for your cooperation!

Hi Thanks I am trying to do this but when I right click Compress is not one of the options. I am using windows 10

Hi @Tim_Emptage,

Can you try:

  1. Right-click or press and hold on the file or folder
  2. Select ‘Send to’
  3. Select ‘Compressed (zipped) folder’

Thanks. I will send it later today

I have managed to get Roon working again. I made copies of the Roon and RoonServer folders, left the originals in place and then reinstalled it from the link provided above. It worked perfectly !!

I am still interested to know why this keeps happening, I am beginning to think that it is my PC that is the problem.

I am planning to buy a Nucleus One when it is released in the UK. I am waiting to read some reviews.

I will send the database later today

Many thanks

Hi @Tim_Emptage,

Great! I’m glad Roon is working for you now.

Thanks once we get those files we’ll try to figure out why this keeps happening and whether it relates to your hardware.
