Roon Friend's - A Social Take

This is the best by a mile, not always feasible for me.

I’m not a fan of social media but I would think that it’s just a matter of time before it’s adopted in some shape or form within Roon. Probably sooner rather than later.

I understand others interest even if they don’t align with my desire for a bastion of tranquility. That said, times change and I change, you change or maybe you don’t. Who knows what the future holds. Perhaps creativity or implementation may change our minds and in some cases perhaps not.

I’m not keen on the ā€œLive Radioā€ menu option although I know many are. Would love the option of toggling said menu off or on for a cleaner interface. Should and if any type of collaboration/SM menu item be presented.

I might place such a request if the feature isn’t present at introduction but I certainly would give any and all newly introduced features a chance.

Hypothetically If it were Roon user based collaboration/SM introduced in the shape of a button or link presented on any given page my guess is we will all have either the option to select it or ā€œjust say noā€.

Social media is an opt in service just as Qobuz, Tidal, DropBox, and LastFM are. Should they introduce such a service from the point of introduction those options haven’t changed.

  1. Build it into the Roon Server application - but this may be complicated because of the multiple user and multiple stream capabilities of Roon - and make sure that those that do not want it can disable the feature altogether.
  2. Built it into the Roon Client applications. This may be simpler from an architectural point of view but again there are complications: Clients are not necessarily running all the time.
  3. Create a separate app (or Roon Extension) that can optionally be installed to perform any social media related functionality. The Roon API already appears to provide access to all of the information that may be required so it should quite possible to do this with little or no changes to the core Roon Server/Client applications.

Personnally, I would find the additional App/Roon Extension approach to be much preferable. It gives people like me the option to not use it and it separates any added complexity away from the Roon Server application.

I think the last.fm integration already fills the scope of this.

No not for me there’s plenty of social platforms out there. We don’t need social media with in roon.
Roon engineers need to keep concentrating on the core product sound and catalog and search features

I vaguely recall Ping.

Did a check;

My calculator-app has no social media integrated. Why should Roon?
Checking some other non-social media- related apps. Nope, no social media integration.

It’s a bit the same as my car has no pedals. It’s not a bike, though both can transport me from a to b. Roon is a way to listen to music, social media for interaction with other people. Both are installed on a digital device. But that’s where the comparison stops…

No idea why people keep calling the request social media.

I’m done trying to explain my point.

Because the topic is precisely social media. Many of us don’t want Roon to get involved with that in any way.

Maybe you have heard about Spotify? Sharing playlists, building playlists together, share music, sharing statistics, simultaneous listening sessions?

No thank you.
I enjoy listening to music with a friend, taking in turns choosing a track, making a note of anything I’m interested in for future listening,
I do this for an evening in Italy every year when I visit friends there, it’s a great social evening, neither of us has suggested doing it remotely from our respective homes, seems more anti social than anything else.

No. It’s just you.

Please no need to make the world a steaming pile of social media.

Absolutely not. Social media is poison and destroys every good thing it touches.

No No No! If you want to be social, go down to the pub and talk with real people. Leave Roon for music.

Maybe mentioning the ā€œFā€ word in your original post sent some people off the rails.

Looks like most everybody didn’t even read the original idea.
