Roon gets stuck frequently and then resumes play

Roon Core Machine

Intel Core i3-3240T
16GB RAM
Windows 10 Pro

Networking Gear & Setup Details

100M/b Ethernet.
LAN connection between Roon Core and Remote without WiFi.

Connected Audio Devices

Using a Roon Ready CH Precision C1.2 Streamer/DAC
Roon Remote is used on iPhone/iPad/Samsung tablet.

Number of Tracks in Library

7500

Description of Issue

I am using the same Roon Core for ~4-5 years and have not experienced such issues before.
Network is pretty much the same.
Streamer is not new as well, I have it for ~2 years.

In the last few months I’ve been experiencing that Roon gets stuck from time to time.
It plays a certain track and when trying to play another track, the Remote play function does not work, and the previous track continues playing.
After a few seconds, and sometimes even more, Roon returns to react and continues to play the next track(s) that were previously pressed.
Also, it doesn’t matter if I play from Qobuz/Tidal or my local files library (which is located on the Roon Core machine).

Restarting Roon Core resolves it, but not for long (maybe 30mins to 1 hour).
I’ve also tried deleting Roon Core cache, and that also helps, but the issue returns after a day of two.

I would appreciate your assistance.
Thank you!

Number of tracks is relevant. The i3 maybe underpowered.

Added above.
7500.

7,500 tracks should be no problem at all for an i3. Something else is going on.

Can you try playing to another endpoint (e.g. the speakers on your Windows PC) and see if the issue occurs there?

Hi Itamar,

Fellow User here.

This is confusing, but, is this the sequence of events?

  1. You are playing a track
  2. You use a remote device other than the core and choose to skip the currently playing song
  3. The remote input is not immediately registered, so you continue to press the next track button.
  4. Suddenly, all the keypresses on the remote are registered and performed on the server, causing you to skip too many songs ahead.

If so, then I have a couple of questions.

  1. Is the Core connected via Ethernet and has no Wifi hops in it’s path?
  2. Does this happen when you are using Roon directly on the Core PC, no remotes involved?
  3. Does this happen using Roon on another Computer that is also wired and not wireless?

If it is only happening across your WiFi devices then something about your WiFi network is probably the culprit. My guess based on my understanding of your issue that I listed above could be the result of the device dropping off the network, you issuing commands, which all then get sent in a batch when the device re-connects.

Sure, I’ll try when it reoccurs and report.

I don’t use the Roon Core directly.
It’s located in a different room, I only use a Room Remote to control Roon (through iPhone/iPad/Other tablet).

The sequence is:

  1. I play a track
  2. Then I use the Roon Remote to play another track.
  3. It doesn’t play the next track, sometimes I keep pressing or try other tracks, but it doesn’t respond.
  4. Suddenly, it reacts and applies all the key presses.

To your questions:

  1. No Wifi, only hard-wired Ethernet, between the Roon Core and the Roon Ready streamer.
  2. I didn’t try to run it directly on the Roon Core. I don’t use the Roon Core as a player directly.
  3. I don’t have another computer to try this out.

I suggest sitting down at the Roon Core and playing music there as a test to see if it has the same issue. If it does not then you are pretty sure it is an issue of your remotes and the Wifi as mentioned in the last part of my previous post, repeated below.

My guess based on my understanding of your issue that I listed above could be the result of the device dropping off the network (your remote devices), you issuing commands, which all then get sent in a batch when the device re-connects

Which would bring up the discussion of your WiFi. What device/router are you using? Have you tried restarting the network instead of the Core?

I have noticed that iOS remote is prone to drop connection to the core whilst in the background and it’s doesnt always restore correctly when resumed and fails to control anything until the app is restarted. When it does resume the remote often has to play catch-up of with now playing which I have a ticket about as it’s shown ffwd through tracks. It never used to exhibit this behaviour and others reported this. Wether it’s down to iOS updates and it being more aggressive to non native apps as Roon doesn’t have the background refresh option or it is actually Roons remote fault.

@Itamar_Axelrod, as your Apple and Samsung Remotes use WiFi, what router do you have, and what versions of iPhone/iPad/Samsung devices do you have?

The router is a proprietary one from the phone company. I have it for more that 4 years.
iPhone 11 (no change in last 3 years)
iPad Air 3 (no change in last 3 years)
Samsung A8 (no change in last 2-3 years)

Nothing has changed in the last few months. I have the same Core machine, Network, Remote devices and Roon Ready streamer.

Thanks, what I am considering is if something in your WiFi network has changed, including any external interference or possibly that you are using the 2.4 GHz band which is more crowded and has less capacity than the 5 GHz band.

Are there any details you can provide on your router (manufacturer, model number, etc.)?

When the issue occurred, I immediately moved to run Roon on my core, it was also stuck.
Both “unfroze” at the same time.

Tried this as well.
Didn’t help, Roon was still stuck…

Seems we’re not looking in the right direction(s)…

This leads me to believe that either your Core is having an issue or your network/Core system is running into problems. How much storage space is on your Roon Core PC?

Has the Core started working consistently again or does it still get stuck?

PC has more than 2TB of free storage.

Still gets stuck. Otherwise I wouldn’t update on my findings above.

I am tagging @support for assistance. It may be your network, but Roon may need to see your logs.

Hey @Itamar_Axelrod,

Thanks for writing in! As a next step, lets give your RAAT Server database a refresh to see if that helps. Steps to follow below:

You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder

I’ll be on standby for your reply. :+1:

This sounds much like a power saving issue to me. Maybe a Windows or (network card) driver update may have changed something.

I’ve re-generated the RAATServer, as described.
I will let you know if the problem reoccurs.

Thank you!
