Roon GUI on Linux? [Answered]

Exactly so if Linux supported the cross-platform tools that Roon is using (as the other OSs do) then you could have a Roon Linux GUI. Why can’t LINUX do that? Why is LINUX the odd one out here?

Nobody said that.

That’s great.

„Free software“ is free as in speech, not free as in beer, as we once said.

It’s about the freedom to copy the code, change it, and build on it.

It can if someone ports the framework that Roon uses to work Linux.

Which brings us back to numbers and the fact that for providers of cross-platform frameworks the Linux platform came way down the list of priorities. Also the decisions regarding the tools used for building Roon have likely been made a decade or two ago, it’s not that Roon just started out. Things looked different back then.

Then I guess I misunderstood the “obligation” part.

Yes, from a software engineer’s perspective. From an end user’s perspective, I doubt it has much significance.

IMHO there’s two parts to this:

  1. The license under which the code is published. Legally, all one has to do is to abide by the license, and I’m a big fan of this. Nobody should be blamed if all they do is abide by the license.

  2. The nebulous moral obligation. Like all moral obligations, they are not clear cut. Nobody should be blamed for not giving back more than the license requires. However, an argument can be made that if your business can only exist because of free (as in speech) software, in an ecosystem that can only exist because of free software, and you built your central server on a free software base, then it’s the „right thing“ (a moral category) to give back a bit more if you can. Might be by sponsoring the development of a tool that you use, or by porting your client to Linux, for example.

Of course, but Roon is a developer.

Not a bad idea. And well, splitting hairs here. Sure it wouldn’t be “native native” but in the current solution we are running the Windows version of the framework. It would be great to get a Linux build.

But I reiterate, your idea is good. The point is to support it officially and makes sure it always works

My whole point! Thanks!

I already asked for that in the related Feature Suggestions thread (you also already know about because you posted in too):

I think keeping wishes and suggestions in the relevant thread over at Feature Suggestions where Roon Labs is actively monitoring and try to get more votes is more beneficial than having a parallel discussion here where only we users care – or not.

This thread is marked [Answered] and old anyway. I don’t know why he got resurrected and moderators didn’t close it right away. Maybe this thread here should better be closed and the new posts be moved over.

Indeed you can operate Windows without a license and that has been true for a bit, if you are willing to do without some features and updates (I think, might be wrong).

That makes Windows “free as in beer”. Try using it in a device you sell. If MS finds out… You can use Linux because it is “free as in freedom”.

Sure, when the “right thing” is optional, it is obvious that is your choice whether to do it or not. It doesn’t stop being the right thing.

Well - this about continuing advocating. If you look into Feature Suggestions I think you can find the official declaration of “not gonna do it”, so why re-post there? - this is about advocating on a different level for Roon to reconsider the decision. So I believe it belongs in a general discussion.

A similar phrase was present in the feature suggestion for folder browsing which is now a reality in Roon.

AFAIK does Roon Lab monitor Support, Early Access, Roon Community Site and Feedback with their subcategories. Roon Software Discussion is, from what I can see, mainly used to host trivial questions as well as unpopular and unwanted (in the sense of “not a support issue”) discussions started out in Support so the company can easily ignore those and concentrate on other stuff.

I see your point - never thought of the discussions here ( Roon Software Discussion ) as trivial! Well, once in a while I will repost in the channels above. That said, I still think is useful to post here to gain support from the user base - just from a couple comments I see other people agree that it should be done not because of the size of the user base but because it is right!

With the US turning into a dumpster fire, there will be a surge of people de-googling and de-windowsing. I am one of them and the only thing in my way is Roon on Linux. Wine, Bottles, Web or native.

It’s disappointing

Are you aware of Community Remote app ? I use it on Linux Mint and it works very well. Probably never going to see a Linux Native Roon GUI.

It works great here as well. Bought the creator some coffee too. Totally worth it. It is currently running on Tuxedo.

Trying it now. Easy install and it works as a remote for other systems, but I can’t setup a local zone output from the linux box.

does community remote not do that? e.g. no endpoint for output, just a remote for other endpoints.

My usecase is a linux box plugged into an Denon AVR via HDMI and TV.

Yes it does work with local zone output but in my case I had to install Roon Bridge on the Linux box before I could see it. Mine is a USB connected DAC btw.

Haven’t looked into that as I have 4 endpoints at home (3 streamers and a soundbar), so no need to get a DAC running.

That was the ticket. I needed roon bridge to serve as the endpoint. Was easy and worked like a charm.

That community remote is … functional, but I can’t say much anything nice about it.

At least Bridge gives me output on my main system and I can control with my phone.

Thanks.
