Describe the issue

iOS 18: No local audio device since update

I cannot play audio locally using the iOS app on the iPhone itself any more, the local audio device is gone (the "iPhone icon").
I tried to reload in roon app Settings-> Audio, no effect, restarted the app and the iPhone. Still no change. I only see the audio devices located on the roon server (running on MacOS Sequoia).
My env: iPhone 13 mini, iOS 18, roon build 1462, roon server build 1462.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Describe your network setup

Unifi access point and router

I second that, same problem on Ipad m4 and iPhone 15 pro, very annnoying!

Good chance it is related to the various network related issues in MacOS Sequoia.
Revert the MacOS update and wait for a fixed release from Apple? See also:

Resetting the Mac with Command+R may be a bit radical as a first step. Try this:

Several people reported a device discovery problem with Sequoia. Check macOS System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network, make sure Roon is allowed. If it is already enabled, toggle it off and on again. Then reboot the Mac. Seems to help most people.

Seems that the Sequoia update reset this for some people (not for me though).

Hi all, thanks for your feedback, I tried the Local Network re-enabling (it was already enabled), no change. I would have been surprised if this would have changed anything tbh.
To be precise: I can control the roon server with the iOS roon app, I just cannot select the local iPhone device as output (see screenshot - German UI, sorry)
Playing sound through the DAC connected to the roon server works like a charm.

Is the local iPhone device visible at all in Roon > Settings > Audio (on the phone)?

No, no local device in Audio Settings. I just see the local devices located on the roon server.

Hi @Udo_Bongards,

A few items for due diligence:

In your MacOS system settings on the RoonServer machine, check if the Firewall allows RAATServer to accept incoming connections.

Do you have any third-party security software on this network or on either Roon device?

I’d also reboot both your RoonServer machine and the iPhone.

We’ll proceed from there. Thanks!

TL;DR: It works now, but I don’t know why.

To answer your questions:

In your MacOS system settings on the RoonServer machine, check if the Firewall allows RAATServer to accept incoming connections.
→ I have no firewall active on MacOS

Do you have any third-party security software on this network or on either Roon device?
→ No

I’d also reboot both your RoonServer machine and the iPhone.
→ Sure, I have done this more than once already for both devices

After writing these responses I just checked the iPhone again - bummer. The iPhone Audio device is now available and it works!

But I have no idea why it works now. The ONLY THING I did was, because you asked, I went into the MacOS firewall settings and double checked that it is disabled. I did not do an enable/disable toggle there. And I did not touch my iPhone since I took the screenshot in my previous post. Also I did not reboot any device. MacOS Sequoia bug?

Let me know if I should check anything else for you to get a better understanding of what happened. Kind of frustrating tbh, I would have preferred to find a wrong setting or so … but big thanks to all who helped!

Hi @Udo_Bongards,
We’re glad Roon is working properly again. It’s possible that restarting your devices is what made things start working. You would be surprised how many issues are solved by simply doing that.

I have Roon on a Mac mini m1 running OS Sequoia. I restart the Mini every day and every day I get the “no devices found” message. For Roon to find them, I need every time to toggle off then on the setting @Suedkiez pointed out and then restart Roon.
I guess this is an Apple issue (and not Roon’s) but it’s quite annoying

I’m dealing with the same issue. No system output option from the iPhone. I don’t know if this is due to the iOS 18 update or recent Roon update. No firewall up, no local network block, numerous restarts.

Hi JohnSherlockHolmes, did you try to toggle the local Network permission and the firewall settings on MacOS as mentioned in this thread? No Idea why, but just visiting these configs on MacOS (perhaps Sequioa?) fixed it for me.

Yes. Followed all recommendations both here and elsewhere. Running a plex server off the same machine that’s having no issues.
