Description of Issue

Roon has become unusably slow. It seems like everything I do is followed by long apuses of the pulsing Roon logo. Adding albums from Qobuz, trying to view an artist discography (get a screen with gray boxes for a long time.). Scrolling is herky jerky. Sometimes when I scroll to a point the albums displayed will continuously jump down (I assume that albums are still being populated above where I am at.). I have all my music on an internal SSD which should be fast? After I reboot Roon it is pretty quick but QUICKLY grinds to molasses. I was considering switching to a Mac Mini M2 but in looking at the comparison to the i9 it looks like it might be a lateral move. Any help? Seems like I need a quantum supercomputer to run Roon. Is my library just too big?

@John_Swanson_Swanson, I don’t have an SGC computer, but given the size of your library (which is on the large size for Roon), you may be running out of resources on your i9, especially if you are running DSP, upsampling, and have a large number of playlists as well as a long history the Roon database is tracking.

Have you rebooted to see if this improves Roon’s speed? Also, is it possible to add more RAM to the i9?

Not running DSP or upsampling. Only have about 7 small playlists. I probably could start culling some Qobuz albums. I’m not sure how much memory I have but I seem to remember 16GB when I bought it and I don’t think it’s user upgradeable. I guess I could try a Mac Mini and return it if it’s no better.

I doubt its memory. Lots of issues with Roon being slow for lots of users especially those with larger libraries since the last few updates. I would hold fire until you get a proper diagnosi seems to easy to blame kit when there is actually issue with the software/cloud side.

Hi @John_Swanson_Swanson ,

Thanks for reaching out. You do indeed have a quite large library and looking over your account, it looks like quite a lot of the track count is tied to your Qobuz.

Can you try to temporarily disable Qobuz, reboot your SonicTransporter, and verify if you still notice slowness after?

OK I’ll give that a shot. Roon (or the Sonicorbiter) decided to reboot in the middle of a listening session this morning. Very frustrating!

Disconnected Qobuz and rebooted all and system is blazing fast. Been a few days and it is still quick. I deleted all my Qobuz favorites and reconnected and the system slowed down noticeably. I’m guessing from having to populate the discography section? Anyway, going to keep Qobuz disconnected and use another app to access Qobuz. I can use Qobuz to audition new discs and then add them physically if I desire. Having a large Qobuz population in the library seems to kill the performance.

I am watching your thread closely. I am also glacially slow at around 120,000 tracks using Roon Nucleus+

How much RAM at 120k tracks you need at least 8Gb , preferably 16 Gb

My NUC has 10i7 and 32 Gb (I suspect a bit OTT but RAM is cheap) and I don’t notice sluggishness on 140k tracks

Have you rebooted everything ?

32GB RAM here too.

Then try a reboot , switch everything off , router etc included then progressively start each component in turn

Are you doing any fancy DSP , that slows things down

Same here with a way smaller library than you. Mentioned this in another post in the support forum: no answer from support

No DSP, and I have rebooted so very often. My Nucleus+ takes nine minutes to boot back up. How about yours?

Mine is a NUC i7 32Gb and takes about 2 mins to show the home page on 140k tracks

Roon loads the library into memory (I think) so varies with the number of tracks ,

How many tracks do you have ?

120k

This weekend I am going to combine my HDD+Mac Mini and wire it to my Nucleus+ via the same Google WiFi node. There is a bottleneck somewhere, I just need to track it down. Things have been really speedy before, so I think it is software related, but because there are so many variables, it is hard to sleuth it. Once one thing gets updated, it affects others, so it is a game of whack a mole and has been that way since I became a lifer of Roon years ago.

How is your Server (Core) connected to the router , if Wi Fi that old explain slowness. Roon advises Ethernet.

My system is all Ethernet connected except for remotes obviously (iPad Pro 12.9)

Mine is a Google WiFi mesh

I wired my Nucleus to my main Google WiFi mesh which was connected to my router, but there was no change.

But honestly, my Roon is totally dead tonight. It won’t load any albums regardless of whether or not I reboot or disconnect Qobuz. I am just playing CDS tonight because Roon has been dodgy all night long.
