Roon no longer connecting to 1st generation Naim Mu-so. please advise. thanks
How are you connecting Roon to the Mu-so? The first generation Mu-so is not Roon Ready, so are you using AirPlay or some additional device, e.g., to feed UPnP, Optical or USB to the Mu-so?
Thank you for your rapid response. I am using AirPlay. It was working perfectly well until this last week. The Mu-so still works fine with music streaming from my phoneâŚbut not from Roon. Makes me feel like I am wasting my money on Roon as most of my listening is to the Mu-so or directly to my stereo set up.
Ok. Did you check if everything looks fine in Roon > Settings > Audio with the device setup? And have you chosen the correct zone in Roon?
Iâm pretty sure I have. And for what its worth, I also have a Mu-So QB in a different room which is still working fine
Good info. This makes it less likely that itâs Roonâs fault.
Is the failing Mu-so on wifi or Ethernet? The 1st gen wifi wasnât great and wifi as such is prone to changing all the time, so it can stop working in a given place even if it worked before.
What I would do is carry the failing Mu-so to the working Mu-so and place them next to each other. Then use the same connection method and compare. I.e., wifi if this is how you use them. If Ethernet, unplug the cable from the working Mu-so and plug it into the other one, then try again
suppose it could be, and it makes good sense to check this when I can later. But keep in mind the Mu-so works fine with Bluetooth from my phone, just not via Roon. And both my laptop and my cellphone also work fine via WiFi when right next to the Mu-So.
Itâs just that I have no better ideas âŚ
Does it work over wifi and Airplay from some other player, like system Airplay on the phone? Does it appear on the routerâs list of connected wifi devices?
Bluetooth doesnât use your WiFi network - so isnât relevant trying to diagnose the issue.
correct that Bluetooth is different from the WiFiâŚI thought it might help the diagnosis, as it shows that the MuSo is operative and not âbrickedâ. And also that the device is close enough to the router that it can receive signals. Sorry if you did not find that helpful.
It does insofar as the device clearly isnât bricked, but it says nothing about, e.g., a failed wifi chip. The complaints on the Naim forum about the quality of the wifi in the 1st-gen Mu-sos are plentiful from outright failures to issues with wifi routers that offer both 5 and 2.4 Ghz and to poor reception.
Thanks much Mario. Guess I will have to live with Bluetooth via my cell phone. I will write Naim, and the dealer, but assume that will not do any good, as Iâve had it for a while.
I also have generation 1 Muso & MusoQB and occasionally have the same problem with either device. It is a Naim firmware/app issue which I have discussed with Naim on a number of occasions without a successful resolution.
If you use the Naim app you will probably find the offending machine is not found. It is usually resolved by using the Naim app and going through the setup process (this also applies if the device is visible).
If the device is not visible hit the + button to add a device and follow the instructions.
You may have to go through the process 2-3 times before the device appears. Once it has reappeared in the Naim app you may need to go to Roon/Settings/Audio to re-enable the device.
thank you⌠I have already done just that several times without success. but your posting. does encourage that I should keep repeating this as it may eventually succeed. Of course, it is also very frustrating that a product of this expense should be be so prone to failure. I can;t help but wonder why this should happen suddenly after I have had this device for so long.
I think Iâd try temporarily connecting the muso directly to your router with an ethernet cable - see if that gives more information to work withâŚ
hi @moderators why did my previous post require approval? Not the first time this has happened so Iâm getting rather curious.
Thanks in advance.
I totally agree and wonât buy Naim again, if the problem persists you can try âspeakingâ to Steve Harris at Naim who is their firmware lead or the tech support team. I donât hold much hope of a solution as I started talking to Naim about this bug five years ago and there has been no improvement.
Naim took a long time to âgetâ digital. The 2nd gen Mu-so and the new Linux-based streaming platform in Uniti and 2nd gen streamers like NDX-2 (and beyond) are all solid.
Sorry, I have to disagree, there were also firmware/app bugs with the NDX2. I had an NDX2 sounded great but it had a few âquirkyâ bugs, one affecting the display. After a year of waiting for a fix I gave up and sold the machine at a considerable loss.
A quick search in the Naim community will reveal all of the details.
I have had an NDX2 for 3 years and never an issue. Spent years on the Naim forum as well until the digital cable brigade chased me out. Canât remember any systemic issues with the NDX2 display although Iâm sure there are posts about it - if the user base is sufficiently large, there will always be some, like here as well.
Anyway, I meant the networking part
