Roon not launching

Hi,

Roon doesn’t seem to be launching for me now. When I hit the icon, there’s a brief busy icon then nothing.
Windows (Win10 64bit) just updated prior to getting the issue.
Log pasted below:
I’ve tried uninstalling and re-installing Roon - no change.
Any ideas appreciated

08/24 12:15:02 Info: Starting Roon v1.5 (build 339) stable on windows
08/24 12:15:02 Debug: looking for *_old files in: C:\Users\steva\AppData\Local\Roon\Application
08/24 12:15:02 Debug: looking for old numerical version dirs in: C:\Users\steva\AppData\Local\Roon\Application
08/24 12:15:02 Trace: Checking if we are already running
08/24 12:15:02 Trace: Nope, we are the only one running
08/24 12:15:02 Info: Is 64 bit? True

OK, I rolled back the Windows updates and it’s working again.
Give me a few minutes to try to work out exactly which one (CPU microcode for Spectre is going to by my guess)

Nah, I was wrong, it`s KB4343909
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4343909/windows-10-update-kb4343909
Is this just my particular setup cos that came out 10 days ago?

Hey @Stevan_C,

If you update Windows once more does the same behavior occur?

Thanks,
Dylan

I’ve been running this since 8/14 with no problem, on an i3 and an i5 NUC. Both running the complete versions of Roon.

Fingers crossed.

Yes, issue returns after re-installing that update

Thanks, it’s an old Core2Quad Q6600 on an Asus P5Q Delux. My main i5 on an Asus Z370-A is working perfectly (doh, just realised I could have answered that one myself)

Hey @Stevan_C,

Just to confirm, this is just a remote device, not your Core, correct?

For this device I was hoping for now you could use the directions found here and send us over a set of logs using a shared Dropbox link.

Thanks,
Dylan

Thanks Dylan.
Yep, full roon install, not used as core.
I’ll message you the link.

Thanks again

Stevan

Hey @Stevan_C,

I spoke with the technical team regarding their investigation and I wanted to give you an update.

Based on what was seen in the logs you shared with us, Windows is failing to launch the UI, but there are no errors visible in the logs on our end. We’ve tested out using this Windows update as well and have not been able to replicate the behavior you’re seeing, so it seems as though there is something environmental here.

Do you have any active antivirus or firewall on the Core machine? If you disable them temporarily is there any change in behavior here?

If the above yields no change, can you check Event Viewer and let us know if there are any errors showing there after trying to launch Roon?

Thanks,
Dylan

Hi Dylan,

Sorry, I missed this reply till just now after I decided to let the remote machine update and see if the problem was still there…it isn’t, it seems to work perfectly now…so stuff knows what was happening there. I see there’s further Windows updates (beyond KB4343909) though. I’ve changed nothing else and the only virus / firewall stuff I have is Win10 default (defender or whatever microsoft calls it these days).
So, all good, but not sure why.

Thanks for the help.

Stevan
