· I’ve just installed roon on my Alienware laptop. I did this specifically so I could take advantage of the fact that my laptop is connected via an hdmi cable to my Denon AVR-45000H. However, it only uses airplay2 and I’m under the impression that the quality of the sound is throttled by airplay. How do I resolve this?

Yes, As far as I can tell. The computer output is DENON-AVRHD and i just played an mp3 and a flac music file using windows built-in Media Player.
When I go into the sound properties I was able to test with a variety of formats. All the way up to 24 bit, 192000Hz.
The Denon AirPlay2 “Roon Tested” connection will be via the network, not via HDMI. You are right the AirPlay network protocol does limit the max sample rate.
Have you tried enabling the NVIDA High Definition Audio device on Roon? I suspect that’s the HDMI connection you require.
Wow that worked! But it was a bit weird. I tried starting a Mahler piece and heard nothing so then I realized it was still going through system. Switched and started an Enya piece. Still nothing so I looked at the Denon and saw it was still set it to TV Audio, so I set it to the CBL/SAT and both pieces started playing. Switched back to system and found it still playing, stopped it and went back to Nvidia and started a Beethoven piece which was showing as FLAC 96kHz, 24 bit in Tidal and the signal path shows Tidal FLAC and the same 96/24 bit, to this pc using the advanced audio transport, to NVIDIA high definition audio. First time I’ve seen this so I think it worked!! Getting to true HD sound is what I’ve been trying for years to do, ever since I bought the Denon AVR and a 5.1 set of Bowers & Wilkins. Yippee!
