Description of Issue

On the Mac, the Roon app will hang after some time sitting in the background. Music continues playing (until finished / end of playlist). When alt-tabbing to Roon it sometimes won’t show. Clicking from the Dock it opens, with the dreaded spinning beach ball.

Sometimes though, it might pop out after 10 or 20 seconds. Most of the times it just hangs indefinitely. Force quit is required and restart.

I found something very similar, unfortunately the thread died:

Hi @I_Love_Vinyl,

Thank you for the report. The team is actively investigating this issue with our QA team, although we have yet to reliably reproduce it internally.

Are you able to provide us with an approximate timestamp of when the issue last occurred? I’ll pass that along to supplement our investigation and it will hopefully speed things up.

Description of Issue

For the past several months I’ve noticed, when coming back to my Mac after several hours (or sometimes days), when navigating over to Roon Remote (which has been sitting open in the background, unused for some time), when the remote is pulled up, I have the spinning beach ball. The only remedy is cmd-opt-esc and force a quit. This happens far more often than it doesn’t.

This is purely subjective, but it feels like the remote software has been getting less reliable lately. It’s extremely disheartening for an ecosystem I’ve invested so much time - and money - into.

Are seeking #support to resolve the issue, or is this #feedback?

If the former, to receive appropriate help, it would be really helpful if you could complete the template included in your opening post, and also provided below. Please be sure to include details of your core, network, storage location of your media files, and any messages displayed by Roon. Thank you.

Hi @PrinceofCats,

I took a look at your posts in the editor … I could you see that you had entered information with the formatted headers rather than …

<!-- Write below this line -->

Which results in the text being hidden from sight :frowning:

I’ve now edited your opening post and restored it so the text is visible, and also moved the information so it sits under the correct heading.

I know it can be a faff, and Roon are aware and looking for a better way to manage the creation of support post. For now all I can advise is too take care when positioning the cursor before typing so as not to edit the template.

Thanks for making the correction, and for bringing it to my attention. Hopefully in the future some sort of more user friendly / modern solution can come about. Perhaps saving one’s equipment / setup in user profile, and having it automatically populate in threads created in the support community, so that it doesn’t have to be re-typed every time by the user?

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Anyone else having a similar issue? Remote timeouts after several hours of inactivity (specifically on MacOS) requiring a force-quit?

Hi @PrinceofCats,

Thank you for your report. Please provide an approximate timestamp of when you last experienced (or next experience) the issue, and the team will investigate diagnostics and involve our QA team.

We’re aware of this symptom with MacOS Remotes and have an open initiative to resolve the issue. I’ll merge your report with another user’s for visibility if you don’t mind. We’ll keep an eye out for your response.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

It feels like it happens quite a lot, several times a week perhaps?

I will start tracking it, make notes when I start playing, alt-tab back to Roon etc. so I can provide a better idea of this. The coming days its going to be very busy (planning home renovations :stuck_out_tongue: ), I’ll try mid to end next week to provide some more details. Hopefully with that it will become easier to reproduce.

It just happened.

I played an album or 2 and closed Roon (red dot). After playback finished, I left it for some time (maybe an hour or two?), then we had dinner, watched the news, and I just came back to my Macbook. First alt-tabbed to Roon but when an app has been closed with the red dot, even though it looks like its still running it won’t actually open a new window. So I had to click the Roon icon from the Dock.

It popped up with a beachball. I waited a minute or two and watched the beachball animation stop from time to time. I think this indicates its actually doing something? Nevertheless, beachball continued.

So I started typing this, and I had to leave because the dog stole something, then I chatted with the wife a bit and came back to my Macbook again. Roon is now available … no more beachball.

This leads me to think I might not have been waiting long enough. It takes more than several minutes to release … and it seems the longer the time period between playback ending and coming back to Roon, the longer the beachball appears (and perhaps, eventually never releases). At one time I waited over 10 minutes before force closing it.

If there are logs or other info I can provide let me know.

Roon sat overnight. I opened it just now and there’s a beachball.

I’m leaving it running with a stopwatch to see how long it takes (if it ever comes out of it).

I think logs would be very helpful in this case but I have no idea where to look.

Edit:
32 minutes it released the beachball.

Is there anything I can do to help get this issue resolved?
