The answer should be fairly obvious. You install RoonOS just like you are setting up brand new hardware, then restore a backup.

Based on the second sentence, although it mentions only Nucleus, my guess would be that BIOS ROCK might get it as well l when BIOS Nucleus gets it, but we will see then. Otherwise, reinstall with UEFI as @WiWavelength wrote
Yes, restoring from a backup is the obvious answer, which I obviously knew about. I was hoping for something less time-consuming.
Well like I said, they are working on bringing it to Nucleus with BIOS installs, so chances are that we might get it for ROCK, in time (whenever that is).
It’s there for ROCK users who have UEFI set ups already…
Yeah I know. I mean specifically the port to ROCK with BIOS installs. I suppose it will be added together with older Nucleus models, but I can’t be 100% sure because the release announcement only mentions Nucleus specifically:

Yeah but that’s you. Someone else might need handholding through the BIOS settings screen for two days. You know how it goes. Someone who feels comfortable with it can do it right now, otherwise they need to wait until Roon enables it for them. Seems reasonable.
Well, what I am thinking of is that Roon is likely to build stuff for UEFI sooner going forward given all new hardware must use that, and as such, maybe it’s not a bad idea to switch over as well.
The one thing I am concerned about is to NOT lose all my files or access to them, which sit in an internal 4TB SSD in my NUC. I might open it up and unplug it through the resetting of the NUC just to make sure.
Has anyone here done this and not had or had issues with this?
Also, my Roon db has ~350k tracks.
Personally, if I were to do this re-installation I would first remove the internal storage drive before doing the re-install and then, finally reinstall the internal storage drive.
Since the drive has already been formatted by RoonOS, it should work without any problems just as internal storage drives can be moved from one Nucleus to another.
I just planted the former “BIOS Rock” associated 4TB SSD in the new “EFI Rock” NUC, performed the OS install, restored my backup, then added (edited) the storage location in Roon. Done. No drama at all. DO NOT re-format the music drive from the Web Administration page ![]()
Anyone prepared to produce a step-by-step “idiot’s guide” to upgrading an existing ROCK based server on legacy BIOS to v2.1 on UEFI; including suitable warning steps to ensure no loss of music or config/database?
From memory, so possibly missing a crucial step, but basically:
There’s no real ‘danger’ as long as you have a good backup, it’s just time consuming… The only drive that should be affected is the M2 OS drive. Let the installer do its thing, do not re-format the SATA music drive. Just remembered, you’re going to have reinstall the ffmpeg codec too…
The other elephant in the room is what about MOCK machines…
Also anyone have a handy link to what rock installs or builds are currently UEFI versions?
From the Roon OS 2.1 release announcement:
This implies that the UEFI boot was introduced in build 256. As a consequence, it is probable that if your Nucleus/ROCK/MOCK device reports a Roon OS build number lower than 256, then it is using BIOS boot. If it reports a Roon OS build number equal to or greater than 256, then it is using UEFI boot.
@Wade_Oram I don’t think so. I installed my NUC 10i7 in legacy-mode, and my actual version is Build 259. To be clear, I never re-installed Roon in UEFI. So I am afraid that the build-number is not a clear indication of the type of boot.

True, 259 was for everyone
But 261 was released in July only for UEFI installs.
