Roon Physical Remote / Control Box

I would love to see Roon develop or partner with someone to creat a physical remote. Something with a dial. The software remotes on iPads and phones are great, but it’s a slow process to enter passwords, unlock screens, app switch, and so on.

I love my Naim app/software remote, but I use the physical remote much more. Roon should have the same option. They already sell the Nucleus. This would just be another device offered at the Roon store.

If I was to suggest development, I would probably start with expanding on a google chrome cast physical remote and software. I use my chrome cast device to display Roon music info behind my speakers. The google remote responds quickly and I could foresee just expanding that remote with a few additional presets, Roon dedicated buttons, and a dial for scrolling.

Someone is already offering a control dial. Look at RooDial on the forums.

Yeah but this is an extension, needs an RPi and so on. Nifty but not exactly plug & play

Can you please produce a $200 remote control unit that connects to the wifi and is a purely physical control device. So it would have buttons for the usual (play, pause, next, volume) but then also programmable buttons (for e.g. shuffle a selected playlist or artist or start a certain radio mix). Can’t tell you how much i miss standard radio where you hit one button (ie turn on the radio unit and music started playing). Currently have to get out phone, unlock, open roon, navigate to a radio station, hit play). Just want a small control box so i can press one physical button and get music playing.

I know there is rooExtend etc but this is not at all a mass market option and not for me.
Thanks

I very much doubt that Roon will do this so you might want to have a look at the RooExtend box which is a pre-built solution that you can just add a remote too and licence (though it comes with trial licenses for easy testing).

I have built a couple of my own to use with Nuimo remotes and it is an exceptionally good experience that puts a smile on my face as I use it.

@DrCWO has built a wonderful little environment here that can also stream music to a DAC as well as offering multiple add ons in a ready built box that means people who are not technically competent can just buy and test the different extensions that are provided.

Thanks but as mentioned it’s not an option for me. I run optical fibre between server and endpoint and want to keep it clean that way. From what I can see the extend box sits between server and endpoint.

Hugo I assume you do not have a switch running off the end of the Fibre at your endpoint?

It doesn’t have to sit on the network next to the endpoint, just be within BT range and I run a BT USB adapter for that purpose so I can get 20 foot of range to my Nuimo remote.

I totally respect your choice of not wanting to change anything about the network (especially if you are completely happy with it), but do not feel that you are likely to get anything that works for you that fits within your requirements.

I am stil looking for a good physical solution and will review some of the proposals posted here.

My use case: this is mainly for my family and guests to be able to shuffle, start, stop, volume knob, as we used to have on our old HiFi pre-amp and amplifiers. My Roon plays mainly on Sonos/Devialet Phantom systems that have no easy to reach physical knobs/button.
