· After the new update this morning Roon will only now play hi res music from my library or tidal. Everytime it tries to play lower res it either stops or the cursor jumps along the track with no sound. I have done a restart on my computer no joy. Any ideas?
Hi I’m not Roon Support but as I suggest as troubleshooting measure to reboot your DAC and any associated network equipment / endpoint.
If that doesn’t work please describe your setup and post a screenshot of the Roon Signal page whilst playing a hires track and when attempting to play a standard res track.
PS I just noticed you are playing an MP3 track, is this problem only when playing MP3 are standard rate PCM tracks ok?
We cannot reach your Roon Server right now, so we cannot see what happens when a lower-res track fails. Please start Roon Server again, make sure the computer stays awake, and reply here once it is running. We will then pull the logs from our side.
Please also tell us the exact time (with your time zone) of a failed attempt and the name of the track, so we can find it in the logs.
Hi I have now switched on my computer it is now 6pm New Zealand time.failed to read track at 6.08pm. Track name: There’ll never be. Failed to read track at 6.13pm, Track name: I need you tonight.
We pulled the logs from your Roon Server and matched them to the two failures you listed (6:08 pm and 6:13 pm on Oct 5).
When Roon reads those MP3 files from your G: drive, Windows returns “Data error (cyclic redundancy check)”. That error comes from the storage device, so the file cannot be read reliably, and the track stalls and stops. The same errors, on the same files, show up in the logs from September 20, before the update, and repeat every day. TIDAL and the FLAC files we checked on your F: drive played normally during the same period, which fits what you are seeing with lower-res tracks.
To confirm whether this is the drive or the files, please do the following:
Please open File Explorer and copy this file to your Desktop, then tell us whether the copy finishes or shows an error: G:\J Drive - Music 123\Music\Music 91\Silk\01. Studio Albums(2006)Always And Forever\01 There’ll Never Be.mp3
Please tell us what the G: drive is (internal or USB external, and the make and model if you know it) and whether F: is a separate physical drive.
If the copy fails, please back up what you can from the G: drive before doing anything else. Roon’s article on Skipped Files describes this kind of storage read error (see “I/O Failure”).
When file is copied to desktop it fails. The G drive is internal Hitachi model HDS721010CLA332. I am now in the process of backing up the hard drive. F drive is a separate drive
Thanks for checking the copy and for backing up the G: drive. Since the copy to the Desktop fails, that confirms the read problem is on the drive itself, and we are glad you are protecting the data before doing anything else.
Once you have switched over to the new hard drive, please let us know how the system performs. If the issue is still present after the move, we can take another look from there.
Great to hear that the move to the new hard drive fixed it, and that lower res tracks are playing normally again. Thanks for keeping us posted, and enjoy the music, we’ll go ahead and mark this one for closure.
