Roon Remote App Crashes Every 30 Minutes on iPad Despite Extensive Troubleshooting (ref#5RG22E)

Describe the issue

At random times, but approximately once every 30 minutes of Roon use, the Roon Remote application on my iPad will crash. The music from the core in queue continues playing, but I have to restart Roon Remote to regain further control.

To adequately troubleshoot this problem:

I have used multiple Roon Core installs (Windows 9 laptop, ROCK on a NUC, at least three MAC computers, and ROCK on my current Nucleus One)
I have used multiple devices to run Roon Remote (older iPad, at least three iPhone models, and current iPad)
I have used multiple connection methods between my Roon Core and my (single) endpoint (USB with the Core machine on the same equipment rack as the endpoint, TOSLINK optical with the Core machine on the same equipment rack as the endpoint, WiFi between the Core machine and the endpoint, and Ethernet between the Core machine and the endpoint)
I have used multiple endpoints (multiple DACs, multiple streamers, and currently, a Yamaha RX-V6A connected via Ethernet)
I have used multiple cable modems, Ethernet routers, and WiFi hubs (two modems sourced from my cable provider, Cox - A Netgear Orbi, and a Netgear cable modem/router with a separate, state-of-the-art WiFi hub)
I have used multiple Library devices (internal HDD, Internal SSD, external USB drives from at least three different manufacturers, and at least two NAS RAID boxes)
My WiFi signal (through all these permutations) has been full-strength (checked every time I turn on my iPad)
My Roon Library contains 7,785 albums and 89,150 tracks (has been double or half at different times)
I have four other devices on my WiFi network (my wife's computer, my iPhone, my wife's iPhone, a laser printer, and the iPad - the wife's computer is normally asleep, the printer is normally asleep, and we're seldom on the phones while using Roon.)
I have used two different iPads (different generations and different iOS operating systems) and the crashes happen with both.

Yet through all these permutations, my Roon Remote app continues to routinely crash! What is happening, and how can I fix it?

Describe your network setup

Netgear Cable-Modem / Router combination (CM-700) using Cox internet + Reyee RG-E5 WiFi Hub (no switches anywhere in system)

Do not know if relevant to you - but I discovered there are different classes of Ethernet - which feed my Roon - when I upgraded to cat 8 from router to Roon have a lot less issue with crashes or the “can’t reach” note

Hi @Glenn_Young,

Thanks for taking the time to write in! Sorry to hear about your remote crashing behavior.

To confirm, what is your current Roon Server machine? The Nucleus One? Let’s keep that piece of the puzzle consistent while we troubleshoot.

Let’s also make sure we remove any wifi hubs from the network equation - temporarily. Get a direct ethernet connection from your Nucleus to your primary router.

From there, reproduce the issue from your iPad, and share the date / time / name of track playing, and please use the directions found here and send over a set of iPad logs to our File Uploader.

Thank you!

My Roon server is on my Nucleus One. The Nucleus is connected directly to my Netgear Cable-Modem/Router via 10-100 Ethernet. The Synology RAID/NAS has my Roon Library (the Synology is ALSO directly connected to the Cable-Modem/Router via 10-100 Ethernet).

I’ll start to keep a log of Roon Remote crashes & (by this time next week) will send you them.

Sounds good @Glenn_Young we’ll be on standby for your reply. :+1:

I solved this problem once and for all by moving my wifi hub from the computer room (at the far end of the house) to my listening Roon (where I run Roon Remote on an iPad). Apparently, there was a lot of interference between the two rooms (HVAC ductwork, breaker boxes, and wiring). Now, with the stronger signal, Roon Remote has not crashed once. Your tablet may be more sensitive to wifi signals than is my iPad, but this was the ONLY solution that worked for me.
