Describe the issue
For a few months I’ve had issues using my main MacBook as an app to run Roon. Luckily it works from other devices (eg iPad and iPhone). The core is running on an earlier MacBook Pro, plugged into the router, where the NAS drive (which holds the music) is also connected. I’ve tried resolving this with ‘Claude’ (AI), and havn’t managed to do it. This is a summary from ‘Claude’:
Roon Remote (2025 MacBook Pro) cannot connect to Core (Martyns-MBP, 192.168.1.248, v2.67 build 1661). All other Remotes work fine.
Background: The Core was originally on this MacBook, then migrated to Martyns-MBP. Worked fine for months, then stopped.
Steps taken:
Restarted Roon and toggled WiFi — no effect macOS firewall is inactive — not the cause MacBook confirmed on same network as Core Cleared Roon cache — no effect Discovered Roon Server was still running inside Roon.app (bundled executable, created 21 May 2026) Deleted Roon.app completely and reinstalled fresh Fresh install is now v2.67 build 1661 — matching the Core exactly Local Core ("This Mac") no longer appears — only Martyns-MBP is listed MacBook discovers Core correctly, but Connect button remains greyed out, stuck on "Connecting..." with red dot indefinitely Checked Core settings — nothing obvious blocking the Remote Conclusion: Core is healthy and streaming to other devices. Remote finds the Core but cannot complete the handshake.
Describe your network setup
everything is connected by wifi. everything works except the main MacBook. which worked until recently
Thanks for writing in and for sharing your report! Based on a fresh Roon Server diagnostic report, it looks like you may have had a successful connection recently - are you still running into issues?
If you’re still having issues, here are a few next steps in troubleshooting:
Disable wifi on your server and only host a single Ethernet network connection.
If that doesn’t help, let’s see if we can perform a full Roon app database refresh on the issue remote (a fresh app install is a bit different, so this might help):
Wanted to follow up on this. We took a fresh look at your Roon Server diagnostic and it appeared there may have been a successful connection recently, so we wanted to see if you are still running into the issue. If you are, let us know what you are seeing, thanks.
It worked for a very short while, but has stopped again (other devices are still fine).
I’ve been waiting for an adaptor to enable me to plug the internet cable into the Mac directly, bypassing the wifi, the ‘plu’ should arrive tomorrow. So will test that.
I plugged the Mac into the router, and turned the wifi off. Checked that I had a connection and tested the speed (37 mbps & 9mbps upload).
Roon didn’t work, message: Waiting for your Roon Server.
Rebooted Mac and tried again, same result.
I did a full delete and reinstall on 21 May before I originally contacted you
Since you’re running macOS, the behavior you’re seeing is consistent with the newer, stricter Local Network permission controls in the recent macOS releases.
Please try the following steps:
Open macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network
Make sure Roon and Roon Server are both enabled
Even if they are already enabled, please toggle them off and back on
Fully quit Roon Server from the macOS menu bar / task bar
Reboot your Mac
After reboot, launch Roon again and check if the devices is avaliable again.
Once these permissions are refreshed and the system restarted, your audio devices should reappear.
Please let us know if the issue persists after these steps, and we’ll continue from there.
under ‘Local Network’ there were about 14 instances of Roon.app … I think all were on.
I rebooted the Mac. Still ~14 instances, but one was off. I toggled that one on, and the others disappeared! And Roon appears to be working again.
Please don’t close the ticket until the end of the week. I’ll test it a lot over the next few days.
This may happen again after updating Roon or Mac OS. This is a known issue that affects more than just the Roon app, but it still doesn’t seem to be fixed
