Roon Remote Stalls on All Platforms (ref#U0M34F)

Full form submission

What’s happening?

I'm having trouble playing music

What best describes your playback issue?

Other

The Roon remote stalls (all platforms) while browsing or playing music

Some more info:

I’m running my Core on an intel 9i5 with 8gb ram (Linux Mint) The core is dedicated only to Roon. I had the same problem when I was running with Rock on an Intel Nuc 7i5 with 8gb ram. I hoped switching to another server would help, but unfortunately not.

The plus side of running linux is that I am able to (kinda) see what is happening.

While the app ‘stalls’ (nothing is loaded from the core), the CPU is taxed 100% on one core (see screenshot).

It also seems to coincide with my library being scanned/reindexed. (see screenshot)

I do not initiatie this reindex/scanning, it is different from a manual rescanning (which is always really fast and doesn’t make the core lock up or anything). After this scanning, CPU returns to normal and everything returns to normal. See screenshot:

Lastly, I restarted the Roon service; after this memory usage drops considerably from 7GB to about 2,5GB… No idea if this is related, but Roon seems to always creep back up to about 5 to 6 GB of ram usage, which seems excessive.

This issue occurs multiple times a day (and is very annoying). It takes a couple of minutes before the app is usable again.

The last time it occurred: Saturday the 23 of march on 19:51

How many tracks are in your library?

Is this local, Tidal or Qobuz?

If local, where is this stored?

22000 tracks, stored across a nas, Qobuz and tidal.

This issue popped up only recently since a month or two I guess. I’ve been using Roon without this issue for much longer.

How many tracks are on the NAS?

Around 8600

To me, and I could be wrong, Roon seems to be reanalysing your NAS library periodically.

To eliminate this theory until @support pick this up, disable the NAS from Roon’s monitored storage for a day. See what happens.

Just odd it happened with Rock and now Roon Server on Linux Mint. Common denominator is the NAS maybe.

I just had the issue again at 12:11 and there was no reindexing going on as far as I could see, so these things might be unrelated?

I think the common denominator is the library on the core. When moving the core from ROCK to the linux Mint PC, I used the backup and continued where I left off. The might be an issue there… Im not starting clean until @support had a look at the logs (that’s why im mentioning the time the issue occurs…)

Ah, I see. Could be the cause.

I just had a look at the logs myself. There seem to be two issues: Yesterday there was a lot of re indexing going on, especially regarding Qobuz. This a small part of the log, it went on for thousands of lines:

After restarting the Roon Appliance process, the log spam is gone and memory and CPU usage are back to normal.

Hi @Mike_de_Munck,

Thanks for the report! We’ve released some related performance fixes into our early access branch, that should hit production soon. I believe these fixes should help with your issue - let me know if you still experience them after the next update. :+1:

Interesting. I moved my core and remotes to EA and will test it and report back. :+1:

Hi @Mike_de_Munck,

I wanted to check in and see how things are running for you so far?

Hi Benjamin,

Things are running a lot better. Where the issue occurred multiple times a day, it has now only occurred once sine I moved to EA. The stalling of loading the items on the remote now only lasted for about 10 - 15 seconds instead of more than a minute.

Timestamp: march 30, 20:10

Hi @Mike_de_Munck,

We’ve released the full update over to production, you’re more than welcome to migrate back if you’re wanting to.

I experienced this issue more and more the last few days.

April 3: 19:52
April 4: 18:07
April 4: 19:23

All screens on the remote with external content simply hang loading and I am unable to change to another song. The currently playing songs keeps playing though.
The issue kicks in while browsing Roon, I cannot seem to pinpoint the exact cause.
Again, you are welcome to investigate the logs.

Hi @Mike_de_Munck,

Freezing/stalling on remote devices is still being investigated by development, so I don’t have any additional information to share at this time. I hope to have more progress to share soon.
