Roon Server connectivity issues with Ethernet Switch in multi-router setup (ref#AT1DOK)

· I am having issues using my Roon server an Ethernet Switch.

I have four devices plugged into a TP-Link TL-SG108S-M2 2.5G switch:
1. Quantum Fiber C5500XK (this is the source of Internet signal into the house) - it’s a SmartNID (Smart Network Interface Device - that combines an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and a router
2. Quantum Fiber W1700K - a wired router pod utilizing WiFi 7 technology (provides WiFi for my basement)
3. TP-Link BE9700 Router - a wired router with WiFi 7 (provides WiFi for the rest of my house)
4. Roon Server (version 2.7) - Small Green Computer SonicTransporter with Roon Server installed on it

Through the TP-Link router, I have used an ethernet cable to connect to an ultraRendu streaming device that is Roon Ready. Roon is unable to connect to this device as well as my iPhone (iPhone 17, iOS 26.5.2).

When I open up my Roon app interface, I am able to see my music library (I use Tidal as well as a local music library stored on a SS hard drive connected to my Roon Server computer). However, when I go to Settings>Audio and try and connect the streaming device, it initially sees in and I enable it and then the device disappears and I cannot reconnect it unless I reboot practically everything.

So do Roon Servers work this way with an Ethernet Switch? Or does the Roon Server need to be plugged directly into one of the WiFi routers?

@Jeffrey_Kear Roon requires all the devices (Roon Server, Roon Remotes, Roon endpoints and streamers) to be on the same network subnet (that is all devices share the same first three numbers in the IP address, example being 192.168.1.xxx). Given you have three potential networks operating (Quantum NID, Quantum WiFi for basement, TP-Link for elsewhere) or two (Quantum network and TP-Link network), you may be running into devices not connecting to the same network for Roon’s purposes (even if the WiFi network names are identical).

Can you provide example IP addresses of your SGC Roon Server, your iPhone, and your ultraRendu?

Here are the IP addresses of all my devices:

ultraRendu streamer - 192.168.1.190

SGC Roon server - 192.168.0.8

iPhone - 192.168.1.209

TP-Link WiFi router - 192.168.1.1

Quantum Fiber C5500XK router - 192.168.0.1

Quantum Fiber Quantum Fiber W1700K WiFi router - 192.168.0.5

Thank you. This is showing two different networks, 192.168.0.xxx and 192.168.1.xxx. Your SGC Roon Server is on the network controlled by the Quantum router and WiFi, while your ultraRendu and iPhone are on the TP-Link network. Roon requires all devices to be on the same network subnet, so is it possible to move your SGC and ultraRendu to the TP-Link network? Alternately, you may be able to place your Quantum networking devices into “Bridge” mode via the Quantum app, and allow the TP-Link to be your router on the network, thereby assigning all IP addresses from a single router.

It also is recommended that you change your WiFi SSID (network name(s)) between the networks so your iPhone attaches to the network where your SGC resides when you want to use Roon. I have two routers in my network and use WiFi only on the network assigning IP addresses, my AT&T gateway has its WiFi disabled.

@Robert_F is entirely correct. For Roon to work properly, all devices need to be on the same network/subnet.

This suggestion is great for next steps, your ISP can also often place the Quantum into Bridge mode if you give them a call.

Circling back on this, and wanted to follow up on the network change we mentioned. Were you able to get the SGC and ultraRendu onto the TP-Link network, or switch the Quantum gear into Bridge mode so everything is on one subnet? If you have not tried that yet, that is still the next step we would recommend, and your ISP can often help place the Quantum into Bridge mode as well. Please let us know what you find.
