Roon Server Error on Windows 10 Pro.

I'm running Roon Server and App on a Windows 10 Pro PC and last week the app only demonstrates the loading icon, followed by "Waiting for your Roon Server". Roon server tray icon shows Roon Server Status: Error.

I have reinstalled Roon 3 times, it will briefly load, then will say "Uh oh, something's not right. Make sure your Roon Server is turned on and that you're connected to the same network" despite it being on the same PC, and checking the Tray Icon again will reveal Roon Server Status: Error.

I did not perform any recent Roon or Windows 10 updates that I am aware of.

Windows 10 Pro PC running Roon Server and Endpoint. Connected to cable modem via ethernet.

Is it just me or has there been a number of similar posts this week on the same topic? Some have seemed to resolve with reinstallation but mine hasn’t.

@daniel do you have time to look into this as well? I’ve noticed a number of posts on Roon Server errors on Windows 10 and 11 in the last few weeks without any clear answers if the reinstall process doesn’t work… thanks so much!

Also, to answer a question I’ve seen on other similar posts, I do have Windows 10 firewall active but do have exceptions enabled for roon.exe, raatserver.exe, and roonappliance.exe and despite this the problem persists.

I am here just to say that I have the same exact issue. None of these helped:

  • Uninstalling Roon and deleting the Roon-related folders in Appdata

  • Disabling firewall or anti-virus completely

  • Updating and repairing windows

  • Updating my system drivers

This problem appeared after the latest update.

I’ve been having the same issue on Windows 10 and have a separate thread here in the forum and a Roon support ticket but have found no solution yet.

It may be a similar outcome (“can’t connect to Roon Server”), but may have a different underlying cause. I notice that you say in your thread that the Roon Server is running, but is displaying an error message. I’ve asked the support team to clarify what might cause the Roon Server to display this particular message - they will probably respond in your thread.

@benjamin I saw you posted checking in on another similar thread, any solutions you can think of? We’ve tried all these approaches mentioned here by @Jukemp but no resolution. I also just posted in yet another similar thread in a user with a Windows 11 PC.

Thanks for sharing the logs. As a next step (and I know you’ve mentioned you’ve already re-installed) I’d like to refresh your Roon database, which is a slightly different process compared to reinstalling a new instance of Roon. I’ll share the steps below:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon”
  • Rename the “Roon” folder to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Are you able to get a direct connection to your primary router, rather than your modem?

-To clarify, you’re correct, my PC is already connected directly via ethernet to the router, not the modem

-Should I be doing this process above for the Roon or RoonServer folder in %localappdata%? As I mentioned, the PC is also the Roon Core so both the server and the app are running on this same machine.

I am having the same issues…have uninstalled reinstalled several times. Roon is broken…I am also unable to find any download link for Roon Server on the download page!

It would be better to open you own topic in Support. Your symptoms may be similar but the causes not necessarily the same

That’s because Roon and Roon Server were combined into one installer package a few months ago.

Hi @benjamin – I followed your instructions above for both the Roon and RoonServer folders, both of which were changed to Roon_Old and RoonServer_Old in the AppData>Local folder, and performed a clean install of Roon. No instances of Roon or RoonServer were running when I performed this installation.

I opened Roon again and despite it being now reset to factory defaults without any of my settings or content, it still has the same error on both the Roon app and RoonServer tray icon.

I reviewed the settings on Windows Firewall after reinstallation and the Roon applications (raatserver.exe, roon.exe, and roonappliance.exe) are all still permitted to access the network. Interestingly, RoonServer is no longer on the list of possible applications to choose from on Windows Defender Firewall.

I have also uploaded the most recent logs from Roon and RoonServer using the upload form.

Thanks for giving that a try! From your account, I see a Citrix Indirect Display Adapter as well as more than one monitor. While this shouldn’t matter, can you please test out attempting to load Roon with only one monitor attached / active?

I’d also test out removing the adapter as well temporarily, just to cross those off the list. Our team will investigate further and follow up with more information as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience :pray:

Well, after more experimentation, I think I found the answer to be with the AVG antivirus. Although previously I had tried turning this and Windows Defender Firewall off, it seems I didn’t do it at the key window of during the reinstallation process.

Here’s what I performed that ultimately worked:
-Complete uninstall of Roon including deletion of folders in %localappdata%
-Disabled Windows Firewall
-Disabled AVG
-Reinstalled Roon and RoonServer on the local machine and restored from backup
-Reactivated Windows Firewall and ensured the exceptions for RAATserver, roon,
and roonappliance were all active
-Reactivated AVG (which detected “IDP.Generic.” in RAATserver although this error never showed up before and I was able to add an exception to it)

It all seems to be working fine so far…
