Description of Issue

I’ve long been using the entire Roon package on my Mac, but recently picked up a Nuc to run some always on services such as Roon, Plex, etc. on a separate machine. I installed Roon server on the Nuc and I noticed first via fan noise and confirmed via task manager that even with Roon server is idle, with or without any remotes connected, it’s spiking the processor to 30% for a few seconds every 30 seconds. is this normal behavior? it is otherwise idling a very low at 1-3%.

It’s very noticeable with the Nuc fan as its constantly going from very quiet to loud.

Here is what is in the logs:

here is a snapshot of the process which shows the 30 second interval and corresponding log.

Have you rebooted the server since it started this?

This is not strictly related to Windows. Recent Roon Server generates high load as well on Linux systems.

Yup, rebooted… reinstalled… even tried a fresh database with nothing added. Still has this 30 second processor spike when completely idle. I deauthorized Windows went back to MacOs and actually observed the same behavior. It just doesn’t seem as intense because the Mac is far quieter and doesn’t ramp up the fan immediately.

I’ve changes some bios settings on the Nuc to keep the fan from going to wild every 30 seconds. I’m surprised no one else with a Nuc has asked this as the fan makes this it quite obvious. I put an order in for a fanless case thought it hasn’t shipped and now says out of stock…hopefully it comes through. Tough to find one for this model right now.

Hi @Nicholas_Thio,

Can you please check to see if a fresh Roon database and a small local library (under 100 albums) also exhibit this issue? To temporarily set up a fresh database:

  • Make a Backup of your current RoonServer Database
  • Exit out of RoonServer
  • Navigate to your RoonServer’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RoonServer”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old”
  • Reinstall the RoonServer App from our Downloads Page to generate a new RoonServer folder
  • On the Roon Remotes, press “Use another Core” and connect to the new database

Hi @noris. In my last post, you can see that I did already try this. I setup a new DB and did not add any music and 30 second interval in processor activity is always there. Also tried on MacOs which does the same so it seems consistent across these two platforms. There’s nothing in the logs and I just wanted to confirm if this is not normal or some sort of “heartbeat?” Without tweaking the bios of the nuc 7i7dnb the continuous ramp up of the fan every 30 seconds gets quite annoying, but I have since been able to make the nuc quiet.

NUC7 cooling fans are markedly noisy. Intel improved the design for the NUC8.

Thanks for the input. Not too worried about the noise at this point as I’ve been able to adjust it to be reasonable and it’s in the office closet so practically silent. I do also have a fanless case on order.

Hi @Nicholas_Thio ,

I know it has been a while since we spoke, but I wanted to check in with you here to see if you are still experiencing this issue?

I don’t believe there should be anything causing these spikes from within Roon, especially on a fresh database.

One theory is that this might be related to Sonos devices, can you please confirm if you temporarily power off your Sonos devices, do you still notice the issue occur?

Please let us know if this issue is still occurring on your end and the Sonos test results when possible, thanks!
