I am running windows 11, i7, 64gb ram. fast ssd. hardwired network, no windows firewall. I start roon server as admin, neither my desktop roon nor my pixel 9 roon app can find the server. I tried cold reboot on windows. also uninstalled and re installed phone app. I am running for a long time windows roon and roon server on windows
Describe your network setup
cable modem, ax3000 wifi 6 router... but running only wired. however since the windows app can also not find the server, unlikely to be a network problem
The first thing to check in this situation would be your local network subnets - make sure your Roon devices are running on the same subnet. With an instance of Roon running on the same machine as your Roon Server, it’d be rare for them not to be on the same subnet, but it happens from time to time!
Are you able to select ‘select a different roon server’ and if so, do you then see your Windows option of Roon Server?
they are on the same subnet. so, weird thing. I rebooted my phone a second or third time after reinstalling the app and this time it found the server and works.
well…same problem again. tonight, the app could not find the Roon Server. I always start Roon Server as “run as administrator”… when I try to open the roon server icon at the bottom right of the task bar, I get a microsoft.net error
"Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.
Access to the path ‘Global\Roon#Startup’ is denied "
Thanks for the update! Running Roon Server in Administrator Mode might not be necessary, are you able to try launching it normally and see if you still have issues?
Perhaps refreshing your Roon Server database may help here:
Let’s try a fresh database and see if your issues persist:
I have a roon folder, a roonserver folder and a raatserver folder. Should they all be renamed as old? then what should I reinstall? I currently have the Windows desktop roon, plus server, plus the roon app on my phone.
I followed your instructions. I just renamed the roon server folder to old and reinstalled Roon and let it set up the server. Same problem as before. (I did not restore my database from backup at this time). My Roon phone app, installed again cannot find the server. Neither can my windows desktop app. Roon Ark still finds the server.
When I look at the DHCP Client list on my router. there are no connected devices with the same IP.
ok…I rebooted my phone and now it connects… we will see if that continues. It only worked briefly.
I will restore my backup.
oh well…i restored the backup, rebooted my windows computer and uninstalled and reinstalled the roon app… the android app cannot find the server. The windows app finds the server and works as normal, shows all albums etc. Roon Arc now shows Roon Server Unreachable, and works in online mode.
When I use the Find Roon OS from the Windows app, it does not find anything, but under server name, it shows the correct name…and the windows app functions as if it knows where the server is and plays music in my music library.
I also tried finding the server by putting in the IP address as shown by my DHCP Client list of my router.
Is anyone out there…I would still like to get Roon functioning…see my prior post re what I have tried.
Thank you
While waiting…I quit out of Roon on my PC, renamed RoonServer and RAATserver to old and reinstalled including restoring my backup. I also uninstalled and reinstalled both android apps ARC and Roon and reinstalled. Roon Arc found the server after a short time, the regular Roon remote cannot find the server.
Ok…waited 12 hours…uninstalled the phone app, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted again and then opened the app. this time it found the server. it seems to randomly lose the server. Roon Arc had access to the server and worked through android auto, even when the standard Roon remote app could not find the server. and after a few hours of up time, the Roon phone app cannot again find the server. I also tried with my wife’s Pixel 7 and it also could not find the server.
I keep trying to connect and sometimes the phone finds the server and sometimes it does not, seemingly at random.
Can you share a fresh timestamp of this? Include the specific date and time, and if applicable, name of track playing.
According to your account page, we’re also seeing Roon 1.8 legacy apps on a few of your remote devices - since your server is running Roon 2.0, we suggest removing any legacy apps at this point.
I cannot share that one…that happened yesterday afternoon and then it would not connect the next time I tried. Ok, just tried to connect this time at 6:56pm and started playing Lucifer Sam by Pink Floyd…it connected. still connected and playing…but, when I stop for a while and try to reconnect, it is random whether it does. I tried this morning with no connection.
After playing since 6:56 pm, at about 9:12PM, I received a Roon Popup message “Uh Oh, something’s not right. Make sure your Roon Server is turned on and that you’re connected to the same network” The phone app would not function further, but my playlist kept playing. I rebooted the phone and restarted the phone and it reconnected… but it has been rare that it reconnects after reboot…and also not a useful way to listen to music.
As a side note, I installed Asset UpNP to my windows machine as a test…same one with the Roon Core, it connected immediately to my Cambridge MXN10 streamer.
the 1.8 legacy app I just added last night to an old phone to see if it would connect. …that phone will not be used and has been since reset…
Tonight I was able to connect with my Pixel 9; however my wife’s Pixel 7 could not find the server, even after uninstalling the app, rebooting and reinstalling the app. She is pretty annoyed!
We’ve taken a deeper look into logs from Roon devices in this environment (both the RoonServer and Pixel 9) to investigate the cause of the disconnection events.
We can see the RAATServer instance on both the desktop and the Pixel 9 phone failing to connect to RoonServer after about 20 seconds. This points to two likely causes:
First, stateful network security might be blocking RoonServer. Make sure you’ve added RoonServer.exe and related processes to the Windows Defender firewall in your system settings, if you haven’t already.
Additionally, restrict this desktop to a single network interface for testing by disabling any active VPNs or VMs that might be enabled. RoonServer calls the Pixel 9’s IP address repeatedly without response; one of these machines may have swapped to another active network interface.
We can see this happening on the desktop itself - RoonServer initially connects to the local Roon client on the desktop via one interface, then calls it again at an IP address in the NordVPN range.
thank you. I am not using windows defender. It has caused other problems in the past.
That is odd re Nord VPN. I rarely run Nord on this device and never run it on my Pixel 9. It does not run in background and on the few occasions when I have used it, I shut it down afterwards.
hmm, my wife sometimes uses Nord on her phone and tablet. I will have to make sure those are shut down. We do use Nord to watch foreign tv shows…but I always log out when done.
BTW…in the process now of setting up a Roon NUC ROCK…hopefully that will avoid conflicts with my pc
two questions re the NUC Rock… it seems to be up and running. My phone seems to connect as expected…(.my wife’s Pixel 7 connected…then did not connect, I uninstalled rebooted and reinstalled and it worked…not sure about the inconsistency.)
first - the name did not change from my PC C141DKP …but it now shows ROCK and that designation…curious why it did not take the NUC name
secondly…I forgot to reformat the external SSD as suggested, but it works fine. Will this be a problem?
btw…I have been connecting ok for the last two days…I have no idea why that changed.
Thank you. Although, my wife’s pixel 7 is still having connectivity issues. I uninstall the roon app, reboot, reinstall and reboot and then the app works fine. After she closes the app, the next time she opens it, it cannot find the server…and I have to go through the uninstall, reinstall process again.
and to your other answer…yes, the restored backup was from my PC. I guess there is no problem having the PC and Roon ROCK with the same name…or essentially the same name.
