Roon server stops randomly, sometimes within minutes (ref#5EOWPB)

What best describes your playback issue?

· Music stops playing mid-track

Please try to reboot your Roon Server and check to see if this helps.

· Rebooting my Server had no effect, the issue remains

Describe the issue

Roon server will randomly stop, sometimes within a few minutes of pressing play....sometimes its fine for about an hour or two.

Describe your network setup

Intel NUC 10 i7 has the Roon Server, wired to Asus AX-86U router, router to switch, switch directly to PC as Roon Remote and playback device, Bluesound Node N130 streamer is used as well. Random disconnects happen on both PC and Node

@Bernard_Reilly1, welcome to the Community. What operating system are you using on the NUC? Windows, RoonOS, Linux? Have you tried using a different Ethernet cable on the NUC, or connect to a different port on the 86U? I have had ports fail on home routers, and sometimes the cable also fails. What type of Ethernet cable are you using, a Cat 5/5e or Cat 6?

Hi there,
This all seems to have started after transferring my core to the NUC, its running Windows 11…I followed the transfer guide to the T and I believe I did everything correctly as it is now the only core running. When it first began I immediately changed my Cat7 cable to a brand new Cat8 and even tested it with a Ethernet cable tester so I doubt its the cable (I replaced all cables in the chain as well). I havnt tried a different port yet, well dont recall if I did. I may have changed ports when I changed cables because a few of them were unplugged, but I will try again. I will try changing ports on the router and let it play for a bit and see how far I get and will update!

I believe your issue has to do with using a Cat 8 (or previously a Cat 7) Ethernet cable with consumer electronics. Cat 8 cables have a grounding connector which allows them to send very high speed data between servers in data centers. These servers have the ability to use these grounding connectors so these extremely high speed transfers are reliable.

Consumer electronics do not use or typically have these grounding capabilities, therefore you may be experiencing an intermittent connection issue between the cable and the NUC or the cable and the ASUS router (or both). I recommend swapping your Cat 8 cable for a Cat 5 or 5e or Cat 6 cable, which is sufficient for home use (and for what consumer electronic Ethernet ports are designed).

How can I upload my log files without it being a total mess? Is there a way to submit the whole file or should I just get a screenshot of the errors? I have copies of both the RAATServer and RoonServer log files if that would help pinpoint a specific issue.

Thanks for taking the time to write in!

Two immediate things to test out:

Temporarily disable other subnets within your local network. Ensure all your Roon devices are all functioning on the same local subnet, and see if your issues persist.
Temporarily disable the windows firewall running Roon Server, and see if your issues persist.

It seems the audio device disappears and comes back causing Roon to stop…can you make any conclusions with this? The iFi Nano is on my desktop and the Intel Audio is my NUC

And this showing the NUC losing its audio…I can sometimes see the device disappear from the audio section in Roon and then come back…it seems to only happen with WASAPI devices though.

Thanks for the follow-up! Based on a recent diagnostic report, we’re seeing repeating failures in file format, leading to unnatural stoppages in playback. For example:

This is showing up when the formats are set to 44.1/16 and 96/16. Can you review your device setup settings and confirm you’re able to play the above formats?

Perhaps refreshing the RAATServer database may be helpful as well.

You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

Create a Backup of your current Roon database
Exit out of Roon
Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder

I had a similar issue that was caused by having a Roku device in my network. Unplugging the power to my Roku Ultra when it was not being used continues to be the solution to my issue.
