Roon slows down after switching to Unifi network (ref#YJ3M6B)

What app are you having the slowness issue with?

· Roon

What kind of performance/speed issue are you experiencing?

· Tracks take a long time to play

Please try to reboot your Roon Server

· No, the issue is still the same even immediately after a reboot

Please try to reboot your networking gear (Router/Switches/etc.)

· No, the issue is still the same even after a reboot

Is there any change in behavior if you try to navigate to Roon Settings -> Library and set both Background and On-Demand Audio Analysis to Throttled or Off?

· No, the issue is still the same

Does the issue happen on multiple Roon Remotes (controllers) or just one?

· Issue happens on multiple remotes

Router Domain Name System (DNS) change

· I was able to change my router's DNS servers but it did not help

What is the operating system of your Roon Server host machine?

· Nucleus

Which model Nucleus do you have?

· Nucleus One

Timestamp of issue occurrences

· I notice slowness occur basically every time I use roon and it makes me want to quit the app.

Describe the issue

I am noticing after I switched my networking gear to Unifi, Roon has actually been noticeably slower to respond. Previously, albums would load immediately to play, I could switch albums instantly, etc. Now I have the album take 5-7 seconds to load, if I switch albums sometimes I have to press the play button multiple times, and then it slowly loads the new album. Is there a known way to best set up the nucleus one on my unifi network?

Describe your network setup

Spectrum Internet>Cloud Gateway Fiber>2 wireless access points; 2 switches, one 8 port GbE that I connect the Nucleus One to and also hardwire all my music streamers to, another switch that is connected via SFP+ port that connects other computers etc.

Just made sure my DNS servers on ipv4 and ipv6 were set to cloudflare, throttled the audio analysis and background work stuff set to unscheduled and had the same issues just now. It took 8 seconds to play one album on my local network library on the nucleus one to another album by the same artist. Just really slow compared to my performance prior to Unifi swap. Are there settings on the Unifi side I need to change?

I manage three locations all with Roon (2x Ubuntu Server on custom PC builds, 1x MacMini M1) and Unifi networks. I’ve never experienced that kind of slowdown. The only network configuration tweaks I use are turning off IGMP snooping, using RSTP as the spanning tree protocol, and turning off jumbo frames.

I turned off IGMP, I use RSTP on the switch that the nucleus one is on, and jumbo frames are off. I have no idea what the hell happened–the warranty just expired (not being a tin-foil hat guy, just noting the age of the product), and it happened right after switching to unifi. Nothing else on my network got worse. Maybe an odd coincidence, IDK. If I need to change unifi settings I will I just do not get whats going on.

EDIT: I restarted the nucleus one and now it is working as expected regarding how responsive and quick it is to switch albums, start and stop playing, as well as skipping tracks. Here’s hoping that fix is a longterm one

Unifi defaults usually work just fine so I tend to look at what else may be wrong here - the reboot is a good step.

Hey @Justin_Walsh, welcome to the community.

Thanks for the detailed write-up. Since the slowdown cleared after a reboot, that points us more toward a device or network state issue than a permanent setting change in Roon.

A couple of things we’d like to check next:

  • When this starts happening again, does the Nucleus One still feel normal in the RoonOS web interface, or does it feel sluggish there too?
  • Is the Nucleus One connected directly to the UniFi switch by Ethernet, with no WiFi link in between?
In the meantime, the most useful next step is to keep an eye on whether the slowdown returns after a longer uptime, and if it does, note the exact local time and what you were doing when it happened. We can use that to compare against the server logs.

If it comes back, let us know whether it affects local library playback only, or also TIDAL/Qobuz playback. That distinction will help us narrow down where the delay is coming from.

With that, we’re also not seeing your Nucleus via your account admin, so we’ll need to review a set of manual Roon Server logs from the Nucleus.

If you could, please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!

Thanks for the insights. I will get you logs. Why is my device not getting you logs on your end, I have the nucleus on right now.

My Nucleus one is using Ethernet only, I’m not using WiFi on any of my roon endpoints or bridges. The only time WiFi deals with roon is when my phone is controlling an Ethernet wired streamer/transport.

also, my problem is with the local library itself being sluggish and slow. The reboot mostly fixed it, but there’s still lag that wasn’t there before. I haven’t tried qobuz to see if that is slow.

when you ask about the Roon web interface do you mean like the Roon app or something else? Again, I’ll get you logs asap

Checkot this Roon help page …

Okay, I have not checked the RoonOS Web interface while having the slowdown problems that I remember so I cannot give feedback there. Working on getting logs now.

I just sent logs, both roon logs and RAATServer logs as requested. Let me know if there are any issues to be fixed on my end, etc. Particularly what I cacn do so you can see my nucleus one via account admin. Either way, any and all insights or answers are helpful. Thank you

I looked in my logs and it doesnt seem to have every day I used roon on there. I uploaded from my laptop, should I have updated from a different device or are singular log files with a date on the modified or created thing include more than one day of logs?

Hey @Justin_Walsh,

You have my apologies for not being more specific in my above reply. We’re after a set of Roon Server logs from the Nucleus specifically, and it looks like you’ve sent over both Roon remote logs as well as RAATServer logs.

Let me know if you’re able to grab a set of Roon Server logs using the instructions found here for the Nucleus specifically.

Thank you!

Just sent them, can you confirm I got the logs y’all need?

Hello @Justin_Walsh ,

Thanks for sending the logs over, yes we can confirm we received them. The logs are showing signs that this issue is likely related to the memory optimization work that is in process. We have improvements in our next production Roon release that we are hopeful can help in your case, the release is currently in Early Access testing, and it shouldn’t be too long before this release is out, so let’s please circle back and let us know how the system is performing once this release is out.

Thank you, I will keep an eye out.

Hey, @Justin_Walsh.

Thanks, please keep an eye on our software release notes. The improvements we are expecting will be mentioned there once they reach production. Please let us know how things are performing after that release lands.

I have the same issue and I am also using Unifi equipment. No problem with any other devices on my network and have a 500 Mb fiber internet connection. I hope your update fix solves this problem.

I have this issue too. It is quite bad. Hopefully the fix will be out soon. It is almost not useable as is.

Yeah I just experienced a new slow down. I was using qobuz within Roon and had a stream literally fail. I’m wired on every single Roon ready device or Roon bridge, and my internet has zero issues. I genuinely don’t understand the issue but I’m on the lookout for updates

Hello @Craig_Metz , @Darin_Davis , @Justin_Walsh ,

When you are able to, can you please let us know how the behavior is like on your end now that the Roon release is out? Thanks!

I will be using Roon a lot today so I will update with impressions on performance and if logs are needed I can supply them too.
