This should be in the support section but the “get help” isn’t working for this - the troubleshooter doesn’t make sense. I get to the point where it is asking me “Does the device show up at all in Roon Settings → Audio?” and the right answer is listed - YES, it does show up.
This morning we selected one of Roon’s playlists and let it rip. After a few songs, it would start a song, wait a long pause with no audio, then skip to the next song. After a while we gave up and turned the speakers off.
I took a look at my log file and saw this:

Now moved to Support. While the troubleshooter may not be applicable to any situation, it does give Roon support key information to assist you.
Can you share a bit about your network? What so you use for Roon core – and how is it connected? Are the LS50 WII connected via Ethernet or Wireless? Did you try to restart the core (and the speakers by removing power)?
Roon support will be back online after the weekend.
Roon (latest version) runs on a Synology NAS connected via ethernet to my gigabit switch. KEF Wireless II’s connect via WiFi.
Both have been recylced.
I realize there are many unknowns here.
My WiFi network is a mesh. I have the KEF’s configured to “stick” to one of the hotspots so there’s no switching delay. I’ve had trouble with that in the past, but who knows, wifi funkiness?
Roon on the Synology is thru the “RoonOnNAS” distribution. Is it “as good” as Roon on a PC or a Nucleus?
The music is coming from Tidal, so now the Internet and all its foybles are in play.
Would this happen if the music was in my library, on the NAS? Don’t know.
Would this happen if I was running a Nucleus instead of the NAS?
Would this happen if the KEF’s were connected to the switch via ethernet?
Would this happen on a different device on my network? I have several zones, AirPlay, RoonReady, etc. When this happens, I can try a different zone but by then the KEF’s may be fine!
This is the problem with intermittent problems like this. We’ll be happily playing music on a variety of zones for days, and then this kind of thing will happen.
The specific errors in the log seem telling, I’m just not sure how to interpret them.
TLDR: Might try an ethernet connection to the KEF and see if there is a firmware update for the KEF?
The long answer:
I have seen others with issues on their LS50W I/II’s and even on the LSX so I “think” that the KEF just does not have stable enough WiFi for Roon bandwidth needs?
I have the version one KEF LS50W’s and the wireless is very poor in them. I had dropouts, flaky playback, lost connection (even to their own control apps), etc. Updating the firmware helped, but they still had issues.
Once I hooked them up via ethernet to my network “most” issues went away.
To answer your questions:
see above
Depends on the NAS and the size of your library, but generally I would say no, it will be limited but functional all depends on the load on the machine and its specs.
Depends, see above, but Tidal also has some issues with bandwidth (IME) so this could be a network thing, also.
Nucleus would have better hardware to serve up the music, but it depends on the root cause of the issue.
Depends on the Root cause, but wired would be better than WiFi no doubt.
Depends on Root cause, but if it’s playing to the KEF and the WiFi connection of the KEF is the problem then yes it would probably be the same.
The NAS is a Synology DS1921+ with a Ryzen V1500B, 4 cores, 2.2GHz, 8GB RAM.
I am running spinning drives with an SSD cache. I really don’t think I’m anywhere close to taxing the CPU and I’m running a business-class gigabit switch.
I’ll try to run an ethernet cable into the kitchen to see if that helps. Most of my other HiFi devices are wired.
I couldn’t find the DS1921+ but if its an updated version of the DS1821+ that I did find, it seems like a very capable NAS and I would think you would not have any issues with it.
Are you using any DSP? Even if you are this NAS should be able to handle it?
I have same problem with my LSX (gen I) running from my Roon Core.
Music suddenly stops, I need to press play again. Usually after 5-10min.
Seems firmware is in order on all devices.
Hi @Brian_Smithson,
Thanks for writing in to let us know about this issue. Did connecting your KEF via ethernet clear up this issue for you? If not when you reproduce the issue let us know the date and time of the failure so we can track it down in logs.
Somewhat similar issue with KEF LSX ii (wired to each other), Roon Core on NUC and library on NAS all wired to network. I don’t think this issue is fundamentally related to Wi-Fi.
Listen to music for several hours on most days, largely from Qobuz through Roon. Probably once per week, tracks start advancing to next after 30 seconds. Happens if I’m just using the Roon ready LSX ii endpoint or my Google cast group that includes other endpoints, some of which are wireless. Power cycling the LSX ii always resolves, so it does seem to be something about KEF’s implementation. Never have this issue with other OEM Roon ready nor Google cast endpoints unless playing to a group that includes the KEFs.
To further ding KEF a little, those speakers have a sleep state, not power off - neither physical power button nor restart in the app. Rather than having to unplug the power cord every time, I’m using an inexpensive smart plug so I can resolve this via mobile app whenever it happens. It’s fine - I’m happy enough with the speakers otherwise (but glad I bought them on sale for the price that the lesser LSX ii LT now lists for).
My KEF LS Wireless II also had issues out of the box. After putting them on a wired network problems persisted. After 6 months of trying all kinds of things I called KEF Support here in NJ and sent them back with details of how to make it fail every time. While they never agreed they’d reproduced the problem they sent me new speakers. The new ones have been perfect, never a tiny issue. My point in telling you this is best to work with KEF’s great support and if it comes to it, send the speakers back. That is how I got my replacements.
We have gone several days now playing quite a bit of music in that Zone without a hitch.
An ethernet cable came today - I wil hook it up to get the speakers off WiFi but I’m starting to wonder if it willl make a difference. Sounds like cycling the power on the speakers is a fix several folks are used to.
After several days of flawless playing thru the ethernet cable I went ahead and ran a cat6 jack to the kitchen and connected the KEF’s to that. WiFi is out of the picture. Should be good to go.
