Describe the issue

My ROON stops working, again and again and I have to restart my MAC to get it back in business. Both Tidal and Spotify works without any problem, so my Software from Roon doesn`t work unless I restart. I will not continue using Roon if this problem can`t be solved. I run Roon on a Macbook Pro and there has not been any problem up until my Mac was upgraded by Apple. In advance thanks. Regards from Norway.

Describe your network setup

Nothing new installed and it works on anything else.

You didn’t say what you updated, but I guess macOS Sonoma to 14.6.1? If so, you don’t seem to be alone:

Hi @Egil_Bokn,

Thank you for the report.

From my understanding of your post, Roon will open, but then freezes. Is this correct? Is there any pattern to the you page you’re on in Roon when this occurs?

If you have a reliable Backup of your Roon database available? If not, start by creating one. Once you have a Backup ready, the heavy-handed step you can try is to rebuild the database, then restore the Backup.

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon + RoonServer (from taskbar area)
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon Server” and “Roon”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old” and “Roon” to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Please let us know if this helps.

Hi. Yes I upgraded to macOS Sonoma to 14.6.1.

Hi Connor. Yes, I have no problems open Roon and if I restart my Mac, it will work for some time, before it all freezes. It looks exactly like normal, but I get no response from the software. I have deleted and re-installed the Roon software 3 times now, and it looks like there is an error in your Roon. I have no Roon server, but use music from Tidal + what I have on my Mac when playing music. best of regards from Egil

Hi @Egil_Bokn,

RoonServer will be automatically installed if you are hosting Roon on your Mac - it’s the “brain” of the Roon ecosystem and runs in the background.

Refreshing this server is different than simply reinstalling Roon, the graphical component of the app. It’s worth trying the steps above if you haven’t already.

Do you have an external networked storage location that you have mapped to Roon as a network share? What about an external USB drive?

Thanks a lot for the follow-up .
I have removed the Roon software twice and re-installed, but the problem is the same. I restart my Mac, Roon works but without telling me why, it all just freezes. I use both Spotify and Tidal and there is no problem at all. I also link Roon and Tidal together and it also works for a short time before it freezes. I can still use Tidal alone.

"Do you have an external networked storage location that you have mapped to Roon as a network share?» No, I have a BlueSound linked straight to my amp and have around 3000 CD in storage there.

" What about an external USB drive?» No, I run it all wireless from my Mac.

Best of regards, Egil

Hi @Egil_Bokn,

We’ve requested additional diagnostic logging from the device. In the meantime, please open Roon and verify that you’ve updated to the latest build, if possible. Our accounts server indicates you’re still running build 1432 on your machine.

Hi again. I ran an update right now and got some weird codes every time I tried to play one song from the list. Weird.

Please take a look at the picture with a new code every time.

Hi @Egil_Bokn,

Ok, the lockfile error is more clear. Try this:

Open Activity Monitor on your Mac and see if there are any Roon-related processes still running. If so, terminate them.

Then, open Terminal on the same Mac and enter this command:

cd /tmp
sudo chown $(whoami) /tmp

See this original solution here.

Please let us know if this helps.

Thanks for the update. I still have the same problem with this number coming up, like mentioned yesterday. I deleted, reinstalled but still the same issue. When I enter the “cd /tmp
sudo chown $(whoami) /tmp” I can`t enter my password on “terminal” for a unknown reason for me. I am the adm on my mac. Any other thing I can do? In advance thanks. regards from Egil

Hi @Egil_Bokn,

You mention reinstall, but you haven’t confirmed that you’re actually renaming the RoonServer file located here before reinstalling, rather than just deleting the Roon application. Deleting the Roon application will effectively do nothing, and may complicate the problem.

Did you open Activity Monitor to check for background Roon processes? If you are getting the lockfile error, then there are multiple Roon brokers attempting to operate on this machine at the same time.

This is beyond the scope of Roon support since it’s a Mac issue, but I’d verify that you’re in fact signed in as Admin when opening Terminal. Try disabling any password requirements for system-wide settings changed in the System Settings Security tab. You need to find a way to delete the tmp file associated with the second Roon install here.

I took a chance and removed ALL Roon stuff in my Mac and that was much more that I would have thought. I have downloaded the app again and this time I have started it all from beginning. Right now the app are working on the tunes available on my Mac and that will take most of the night, it looks like. Crossing my fingers that the “cleaning” helped me a lot. regards from Egil, again

There is no typing feedback (like asterisks or something) in the terminal when you type the password. (For security reasons so that e.g. the password length is not revealed). Simply type it blindly and then press Enter.

Finally, a good start. This morning I checked out Roon and it looks like it is all OK again after I removed ALL Roon stuff I had on my Mac. I have been playing for an hour through my Mac, and all I need to do is to hook it up to my stereo system rgs from Egil

That’s great. How did hooking up your stereo go?

Thanks a lot for a good follow-up. My Roon works very well on my high-end stereo, but I have a minor problem, adding my high-end wireless plugs and my high-end headphones with cable, but like I say, A minor problem. I just spent one hour using TIDAL with my wifi and headphones, so this is just a minor stuff I (hopefully) will figure out soon. Again, great service from you guys!!
