· I have a Grimm MU1. Roon has actually worked well prior to the most recent Roon update. With the most recent Roon update, the Roon only sporadically works. If I plug in my hard drive Roon cannot get out of the wheel of death. It has that flashing Roon logo and just goes for hours. Even if I don’t plug in my hard drive, this happens overnight. I cannot back up the database. Moreover, I have reset the Roon nearly everyday. It’s crazy how this doesn’t work. I do have over 100k tracks so that may be an issue. Any help is appreciated! I am working with Grimm but any help is appreciated.
Welcome to the Roon community! I am so sorry that your first post here is about such a frustrating issue. I completely understand how aggravating it is to deal with constant freezing and the flashing logo, especially when you have a carefully curated library of over 100k tracks.
Since you mentioned that you are already working with Grimm support regarding this behavior on your MU1, could you please share a brief summary of what they have already diagnosed or suggested?
Knowing what troubleshooting steps you have already covered with their team will help us avoid duplicating any diagnostics and ensure we don’t ask you to repeat things you have already tried.
Once we know what Grimm has found so far, we can determine the best next steps to get your Roon Server stabilized. We look forward to your reply!
So far they have not offered much. Mark is wonderful but they are still analyzing the issue. It seems literally stuck on this screen. In the event that I remove the hard drive it can start up and then when I plug in the hard drive it goes back to the screen for hours. If I reset the roon database (or whatever it’s called) then install a back up it works, even if I plug in the hard drives. BUT overnight I wake up and it’s back to this screen. Roon has been great but a couple of your updates have been disaster— this being one of them. Thanks!
Since you’re running Roon Server on a third-party machine, please note that we won’t be able to review any potential hardware-related errors from any system logs, unless you’re able to provide them, or, have Grimm investigate them.
That said, here are a few additional things you can test:
Action: If you can get into Roon after a reset (before it hangs):
Go to Settings > Library.
Set Background Audio Analysis Speed to Off.
Set On-Demand Audio Analysis Speed to Off.
Restart the MU1. If it stays stable overnight, you can later turn these back on to "Throttled."
Often, the “flashing logo” occurs because Roon is stuck trying to sync your local 100k tracks with your streaming accounts (metadata matching).
Action: After your next database reset, do not log into Qobuz or Tidal immediately.
Add your hard drive and see if it finishes the local scan. If it remains stable without the streaming services active, the "loop" is likely a sync error with the Roon Cloud.
What is the make and model of this drive? Can you check the health of this drive and confirm there are no signs of corruption?
Lastly, while I don’t believe this is the reason behind your issues, we do see a handful of corrupt files popping up in logs, for example:
Warn: [storage] [directory] Failed to extract audio format from '/mnt/usbdisk-My_Book/Music/My Music/ITunes Purchased Folder/Ipod Music/Ian Hislop/Oxford University_ Podcasts of the WW1 Poetry Digital Archive Project/1-01 Ian Hislop interview.mp3': CorruptFile
I’d check the health of your files and library, and repair any corrupt files as well.
We’ll be on standby for your reply and results, thank you!
I am testing it this weekend. One change I am making is that instead of two hard drives I am going to consolidate to a single hard drive. Ifs why it’s taken me some time. I’ll report back later today.
