My Roon software won't start up

My server had a couple of power outages. After that, Roon won´t start, but ARC functions.
I cannot play music on my main rig, the program seems to start launching, but them dosen't open.

It would be helpful to know more about your system.
Where do you run Roon server ? NUC ROCK , PC , other ?
Which interface do you use as Roon Remote ? phone app, desktop pc ?

Ok, so I am running Roon on an old I7 5500U Toshiba laptop with 8GB RAM, on 64 bit windows 10 Home, version 22H2 (can’t update to 11), strictly on grid power as battery is dead.
My library had some 3600 albums now, almost exclusively through Tidal, my only de facto streaming content provider, and a few local files( some 30 albums in WAV and some 3GB of music files in lesser codecs from an old phone).

I started using Roon some 4 months or so ago, and had not performed backing up yet. My 500GB SSD is less than half full at this time.

The laptop outputs to a ifi Audio Zen streamer, and I run that on exclusive mode, and full compatibility mode selected on the streamer, not Roon specific mode, as it sometimes it freezed that way. The DAC afterwards is a RME ADI 2 DAC.

For control I use either the laptop keyboard, or sometimes fire the Roon remote app on my Sammy 21 ultra, phone , both work fine. Roon Arc is running on the S21, smoothly.

After the 2024 update, Roon began having trouble updating the library, it has some 107 tracks/albums waiting to be uploaded forever, like only managed 6 of them, like 1 per week, the rest on hold, whereas before it added tracks and albums quickly.

After last power outage and restart, I click Roon and the spooling icon appears for a few seconds, then stops and nothing happens.

Just checked, Windows is on last update, and so far as I can tell all other programs (Focus Fidelity, REW, Office, Chrome, etc) are running as usual.

I have the server on a NUC rock and after reading about possibility of library corruption due to power losses, I decided to install a UPS which feeds also the home modem, and this setting has been very reliable.

It’s probably not the advice you were looking for, but since you have a laptop, have you considered perhaps looking for a third party battery from amazon ?
That could cover your for a couple hours, and who knows, maybe save your database to become corrupted, which could related to your issue.

Regarding the database not loading, I never encountered that kind of issues, so I don’t feel qualified to comment on how to fix it with the risk of making things worse.
Maybe someone else could advise.
Good luck.

Hi, Riccx thanks for the advice on the power management, I may look into getting a small UPS to keep things running even if

However, the issue still remains, Roon won’t start, and it was already acting funny on the library updates, hope someone from Roon directely answers here asap…

Just another user here.
Something that support will also ask you:
You haven’t said anything about your network, are there any switches, repeaters or extenders, and how the server on your laptop is connected to the router?
If via Wifi, that could be a cause.

A UPS will help mitigate problems with voltage fluctuations affecting/damaging equipment and allow you time to gracefully shut down your equipment in the event of power loss. Roon keeps the database in memory and any immediate shutoff runs the potential of database corruption.

Now, in Fernando’s case, since he is running Windows, he can run a USB cable between the UPS and the computer along with the UPS software, so that the UPS will issue a shutdown of the Windows system allowing things to close correctly at a specified battery time remaining or percentage as setup in the UPS software.

ROCK, however, does not have this option. So, even on a UPS, the user will have to make sure they get to the machine physically before the UPS battery power runs out and lightly press the power button to get it to turn off. I mention this because a long press will immediately shut off the system and have the same repercussions as a power failure. So, with ROCK the UPS will help mitigate potential hardware damage due to power fluctuations, but, will not automatically shut the system down when battery power is nearly gone.

If you do have a power failure, when the system comes up, I always suggest immediately restoring the last good backup before resuming use. Backup strategies are important to lessen the potential for data loss. I personally keep an overlapping daily, and weekly, and monthly set of backups.

Also, keep in mind Roon backups are just for the database, NOT, the music, so you will need a different backup strategy for your music files.

I would suggest looking, when you can, at Settings/Library Skipped Files to see if there is anything listed there.

Thanks for the tip Axel.
The conections are the same from day one, and have always worked trouble freee, be it with outtages and router or net reboots .

I have my laptop server hardwired to a generic 5 way TP link internet switch (TL-SG105S) itself hardwired to the router beside it, some Huawei Vodafone provided 2 and a half years ago with my net subscrption.

Everything and everyone else in the house is working as usual with the router/wifi.

Again, its not a setup or some functionality that is amok, the program doesn’t load at all, no screen no extra time to load, just the loading icon a few seconds, and then it stops and nothing happens. Multiple reboots, checked for Windows updates, restarted dozens of times, Roon just doesn’t start.

Good info, I was totally unaware of.

I was not into getting a new battery for such an old laptop that I am running 100% of the time on mains, and therefore will ruin pretty fast, but now it doesn’t look like such a bad idea…and a small RAID down the line maybe…

Thanks for everyone from the user community pitching in with usefull info.

However, I continue to not be able to launch Roon at all, and almost 48h after contact with Support, and much more of trying to solve the issue myself, I haven’t been offered any help from the official Roon team.

This is not the level of support I expect, or indeed any consumer paying several hendreds of euros for a piece of software is expecting.
This is my first interaction with Support, and I am underwhelmed…

Support is four people, and they operate a queue system. Your request is in their queue, but not yet at the point where they can deal with it.

Given that you say Roon ARC is working, then the Roon Server on your WIndows PC must also be working.

It sounds as though the Roon application (the user interface) is just not starting up correctly. Does the Windows Event Viewer show any errors associated with Roon?

Hi @Fernando_Pinto,

Thanks for taking the time to write in, and welcome to the community! We’re thrilled to have you, I do apologize its an issue that prompted your first post though.

The first thing to check - your windows firewall settings. If your only issue is not being able to access the Roon GUI from the same device running Roon Server, it’s often times due to a firewall restriction.

Here’s more info on what needs to be set as a firewall exception within Roon - you can also temporarily disable your windows firewall and see if you’re able to boot up Roon. I’d restart the machine after disabling just in case.

If you still experience issues, lets get a fresh install going on the remote app only, steps found below:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon”
  • Rename the “Roon” folder to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

I’ll be on standby for your reply. :+1:

Hi, glad to hear from you.

Unfortunately I had to leave unexpectedely and will only be back Sunday, I will try your fixes then.

Greetings

Hello, finally got to fire up t
he system and did what you advised. After disabling windows defender and a couple of restarts, Roon seems to be working again, and my library intact, with no music adding pending ( can’t really say they were finally added or discarded, its been a while, don’t remember wht was on queue).
Thanks for the tips, now to make my first backup just in case, stormy weather again over here…
