Description of Issue

I have just attempted to update my iMac that had both Roon and RoonServer running on it. Both reported to be 1311. I ran RoonServer all the time, and used the Roon app for detailed interactions with my lirbrary.

Following a notification, I ran the available update on RoonServer (via an iOS remote, with Roon closed, but the server running).

RoonServer closed itself down following the download, but now no longer opens - nothing seems to happen at all now when trying to launch it.

As I knew that the architecture was likely to change, I then tried the Roon app instead. This doesn’t open, either, and triggers a Finder message, as follows:

You can’t open the application “Roon” because it may be damaged or incomplete.

I have also downloaded the Roon app from the downloads page, and attempted to replace the Roon app with a fresh copy, but this still results in the same error message upon completion.

I would appreciate urgent support / guidance to resolve this, given the update process has completely killed access to Roon!

For what it’s worth, I actually left the Early Access program after encountering this issue a while back, when that update process failed, and I ended up moving across to production instances of the Roon App and Roon Server to remedy the matter at the time. I had hoped that this wouldn’t happen to me again, but this seems like the same issue I encountered back then, and it’s not listed in the known issues list referenced in the Potential Solutions post. Plus this time, I no longer have an alternative production option to fall back on.

I’ve opened the package contents of the RoonServer application and located the RoonAppliance which I’m now running as a workaround for the app running correctly.

I note when accessing via Roon Remote via iOS that the RoonServer is still reporting an update is available, and that it remains on 1311.

Furthermore, the Roon application is greyed out and it doesn’t seem possible for me to install a fresh copy in its place - each time I try the Application has a Zero bytes footprint when viewed in the finder.

At least I have a workaround for now.

I’m considering deleting the Roon application and its associated files/folder and then running the update on the RoonServer 1311 (via ann iOS remote whilst running RoonApplication again).

Any thoughts?

I’m still running Roon in the way outlined in my last post (Roon Application, via RoonServer 1311 package contents). I’ve tried to run the update again for RoonServer, via an iOS remote, as it was offered, and it got to the stage of suggesting a relaunch was necessary after downloading, but this didn’t complete. So, I run the RoonAppliance from within the RoonServer package contents again.

One other thing to note - when RoonApplication is run from within the 1311 RoonServer package contents, there is nothing in the menu bar to indicate it is actually running - this is a change from prior to the attempted upgrade that has failed.

Hi, @Greg_Ince, sorry to hear about the issue you are having. Could you, please, visit this page, grab the installer for macOS and try a manual install to see if this fixes your issue?

Thanks!

Hi @ivan,

Thanks for getting back to me - I’ve just used the installer to do a manual install using the link for Mac, from the top of the page - and I am now running 1353!

Looks good on a quick inspection of the library! :joy:

FWIW, the position I started from was that I had already deleted the Roon application, as an experiment, earlier today, but had left RoonServer intact whilst utilising the RoonAppliance from within the RoonServer Package Contents.

On running the installer, the RoonServer application greyed itself out, and the new Roon installation worked some magic in the background - I lost some settings for the GUI, presumably due to deleting the Roon application, along with it’s associated folder earlier today (?), but these were only really UI elements/choices, and easy for me to restore from memory/preference.

Oh, and I had also removed RoonServer from my login items prior to running the installer, too.

Can I now delete RoonServer from my iMac? If so, can I also clear out any other associated files from my iMac’s Library folder, too?

Thanks!

Greg

PS the Roon UI seems pretty to me now - my fans have not turned on! LOL.

Hi @Greg_Ince,

Thanks for the update! No need to delete Roon Server if everything is back up and running.

Happy listening! :notes:
