Roon upgrade from 1.8 to 2.0 broken on Mac Mini 10.15.7

Roon Core Machine / Description of Issue

Mac Mini - Late 2012 upgraded to 10.15.7 will not upgrade to Roon 2.0
iPad remote is on Roon 2.0 and will not connect to the core any longer

You need the remote legacy version for iOS

And welcome to the community

Thanks! One more problem now - I reinstalled Roon on my Mac Mini 10.15 trying to solve the problem. Now it says “Previous Core Installed” go back to use the previous Core. I go back and it hangs with a speaker Icon flashing and goes nowhere… Help!

Hey @Scott_McRae,

Following up on this thread, I see your core and remote are both running Roon 2.0. Are you still running into issues here?

Hi Ben,
I’ve been out of the country and have never fixed this issue. I downgraded the iPad to legacy 1.8 and have the Mac Mini Catalina running 1.8. The iPad and Mini talk to each other but I have an ELAC DSP on the same wired network that used to work but now does not show up in the Settings>Audio to see the audio devices. Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

Hey @Scott_McRae,

I’ve merged and re-opened your previous thread for better tracking. I’m sorry to hear you’re running into issues with your ELAC DSP. Getting a better idea of your full system setup would be helpful while we continue to troubleshoot. If you could please fill out the system info below:

Roon Core Machine

Include your operating system and machine info (Model, CPU, RAM)

Networking Gear & Setup Details

Your network gear (model of routers/switches) and if on WiFi/Ethernet

Connected Audio Devices

Specify what devices you’re using and their connection types, like USB/HDMI/Chromecast, etc.

Number of Tracks in Library

Tell us how large your music library is, eg. “30,000 tracks”

Description of Issue

Tell us about the problem you’re having in as much detail as possible. Screenshots are always appreciated!

What happens if you temporarily test hardwiring the Elac directly to your core device? Are both your core and the Elac hardwired directly to the same router? If you haven’t yet, starting off with a hard reboot of your router may be helpful.

Hi Ben,

Everything worked great for a couple years then the iPad was upgraded to Roon 2.0 and stopped connecting to the Mac mini core. I then tried upgrading the Mac OS to Catalina per instructions on your site to take Roon 2.0 to get them on the same version and that didn’t work.

I was still able to connect to the ELAC DSP via the Mac Mini and play through Qobuz, but not able to have the iPad work the core via WiFi. The Mac Mini 2012 - 4GB of RAM is connected via ethernet on the same network through a switch to the ELAC. The iPad is connected on the same network via WiFi.

Again, all worked great for a couple years until the version changes when the iPad could not connect with the core due and the error message on the iPad was “unable to connect to legacy 1.8, upgrade your version on the core” or something similar and that’s when the iPad wouldn’t connect to the core and now the Mini or the iPad cannot see the ELAC on the network, no audio devices available after rebooting everything several times.

Thanks!

A

Ben - I have confirmed the ELAC is on the same network as I connected to it via browser to update the firmware. The mac mini gets out on the network fine and connects to quobuz fine.

There was a mention on your site to troubleshoot by deleting a database file, I forget the name now when I restart Roon it starts from scratch everytime asking where my music is and if I have a streaming service so I reconnect to Quobuz. Hope this helps troubleshoot.
Thanks!

Hey @Scott_McRae,

What switch specifically? Can you please test out hardwiring your core device and the ELAC directly to your router, bypassing any network gear in between?

Are you able to select the ELAC as an output source from the Mac mini sound preferences? I’d also be curious to see if the ELAC appears under your Audio Midi settings on the Mac mini.

To confirm, this happens to you currently, whenever you close Roon on your Mac mini core? Do you have any recent backups available?

Yes I am able to see the ELAC DDP-2 from the Apple Sound output source via Airplay on the Mac Mini. The network switch connects the Mac Mini, the ELAC, Apple TV which all show up on the network, just not able to see and Audio devices from within Roon.

I don’t have a backup unfortunately.

Hey @Scott_McRae,

Thanks for the additional info! Are you able to test out making a manual backup? Head into Settings>Backups>Back up now. Let me know how that goes.

After this, I think it’d be good to do a database refresh. Steps to follow below:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon”
  • Rename the “Roon” folder to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Thanks, Scott!

Ok - this update of the Roon folder got me back up and running connecting to the ELAC so thanks! Now the iPad is on 2.0 and can’t connect to the Core running 1.8. Is there a legacy iPad version to go back to 1.8?

Thanks -Scott

Hey @Scott_McRae,

Glad to hear it!

There is! You can head into the app store and search “Roon Remote(Legacy)” which should get you the proper app.

Let me know how this goes!
