If running Android on a pi then a Cast receiver all would be nice.
I built a number of 32" and 40" touch screens running Android for the warehouse team that were running on Raspberry Pi’s and they worked fantastically.
I never tried using a Cast app but there are loads on the Play Store and I bet that would work great and be so simple (though I think the 8" touch screen is a bit small given our ages ).
I have a feeling @AMT was using one with his FIIO R7 device recently.
Maybe I will build a test one running Android on a Pi over Xmas to see how it works
If the Pi would have a higher-res, lets say showing songtext for example too with RoPiee XL in a good looking case, I would be more than happy (and had no discussion regarding Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen with ROON and Google).
LineageOS would be nice, since they have the actual AndroidOS…but…installing Apps on a RPi3 is not a good idea. Not enough memory.
If Google comes up with stopping the screensaver starting automatically on my Nest, i’m happy. If it’s going to be ROON tested even happier…but hey…that’s not going to happen.
I was thinking about building my own Pi based device to plug into the 42" screen on the wall in my man cave. I currently have a RooExtend box plugged in but sometimes Chromium or Roon mess up so maybe I could just turn one of my Pi’s into a Chromecast receiver.
Sadly I am unable to make use of these of these. Given how often I take my glasses off and put them on these days it would make life much easier
just checked Plex…nice tool but to use it properly i think you need a big media library, what I don’t have…only streaming and some vinyl…radio and so on…
On my big screen use an Apple TV and the TV:Remote app from the app store for this. It’s a Roon-aware app so the TV remote’s transport buttons (as well as the Apple TV remote’s transport buttons) all work. The app is a one-time $3USD purchase in the Apple TV app store.
It’s probably a bit more expensive than the Pi route but not by much.
Gets you displays like this with some customizability:
I already use Nvidia Shields on my main TVs and very happy with those. The Pi’s are already all over the house looking for little projects after being freed up after lock down projects or replaced by dedicated streaming purchases.
The Apple TV app looks nice though and if I used Apple TV I would definitely buy that.
But I will try setting up another Android Pi and see how well that works as a Chromecast receiver as it will keep me out of trouble for a few days
After my previous message I found a box with 4 Pi 4s in the top of it, as well as the two I use for RooExtend.
2 of them used to run Ropieee with HiFiberry devices in. 1 run my DNS server and Roon extensions and another was used for home automation project’s.
Nothing personal, @Rugby, but if you don’t have a few extra Pi’s lying around, I’m not sure you belong in this thread
This thread has actually given me some ideas. I’ve got a spare Pi or two but I’m not putting together how that would come together as an end-to-end solution.
The Apple TV idea is actually pretty interesting to me, though it adds some cost. All you need to make this work is a photo frame with HDMI input (which would of course work with a Pi or a casting receiver).
I’m not having much luck finding that sort of device but I’m going to look. Once you have this up with an Apple TV hidden away behind it (or even attached to the back), you could use the Apple TV remote to power up and down. It would launch straight into the TV:Remote app if you keep that running. It’s on-screen display allows you to choose what zone you’re viewing.
I thought it, but wasn’t man enough to write it out
I am looking at the latest Android images now, as the one I previously used was Android 12 and I put out about 12 large touch screens based on that.
It wasn’t perfect but they were solid and running for months at a time.
You would not really need a TV, just something that could either connect via HDMI or the Pi ribbon cable (which I have not used in a long time and found very fiddly at the time)
