Describe the issue

Windows Reliability History shows RoonAppliance (RoonServer) crashing exactly every 20 minutes since Aug 29 2024 while idle or playing.

Describe your network setup

RoonServer (W10 Pro Machine) connected via a wired Gigabit Network. Multiple Hardware providers: Ubiquiti Gateway, Switches, TP-Link Switches, Sagecom Modem providing Fiber Gigabit Internet.

Hi @allen1,
Thanks for writing in to let us know about this issue. We’ve activated diagnostics on your server to allow them to go through you can either leave your server running for a few minutes or use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader.

This looks just like what happened to my setup on 5th September.

I had thought it was WiFi issues at the time but on checking back I see that it was doing this since long before I updated some WiFi firmware.
I had not spotted the “regular intervals” part but in my case it was every 15 minutes, usually within a second. Oddly precise.

You can double-click on an individual event in the details list you posted; then the viewer will show you more info on that particular event.
In my case they are all Exception Code: C00000FD (that is a stack overflow).

RoonServer and Roon left running. All Roon related logs also uploaded to Roon File Uploader as well.

Have the same exception code as you. What was the problem and fix?

Nobody knows. It’s still rolling over here…

I have not seen the memory issue for a while but then I still have lots of things turned off. The stack fault keeps happening too so maybe it is crashing and restarting every time before memory gets a chance to fill up.

I checked my Windows log files directly and it looks like this stack fault has been happening since at least February. I have reported the memory issues before (as far back as March) but if a support thread goes 14 days without comment it just gets closed automatically.

There are a few similar cases around. Hopefully there will be some progress soon.

Issue started recently on my setup. Awaiting what Daniel will say once my logs are reviewed. I feel it’s a possibly a Windows Update (proper/corrupt/failed) or Adobe Update just before the issue started. Have a system restore point to go back to and see if indeed is the issue.

Ironically it has just gone away on mine.
No Windows updates, no changes to my network. No roon updates.
But no problems here in the last 24 hours. It’s like it just stopped happening.
All very mysterious. I have no idea what is causing it.

I am slowly turning things on in Roon to see if there is a point at which the problems restart.

It is so hard to correlate any causes with results though. But then that’s what the logs are for. Keeping fingers crossed.

Hi @allen1,

Thanks for writing in and sharing your report! Indeed symptoms do seem similar to what @Andrew_Beveridge is experiencing. Our team was able to review the logs you sent over - thank you for that.

For next steps, could you create a fresh backup, and then disable Tidal and perform a library clean up, and see if your issue persists?

We’re also seeing a handful of corrupt files that are failing analysis early in your server logs, that likely aren’t tied to your issue directly, but would still be worth cleaning up. Below is the album trace:

Failed to extract audio format from 'X:\DSF Albums\1981 - Buddy Guy - DJ Play My Blues [SACD DSF][2004]
Failed to extract audio format from 'X:\DSF Albums\1974 - Miles Davis - Get Up With It [SACD DSF][2002]

See if removing the above albums potentially helps as well.

Did as instructed above. Issue not resolved, still crashing every 20 mins on the dot.

Thanks for giving that a try! We have a ticket with development that will need additional review before providing any additional next steps. We appreciate your continued patience in the meantime. :raised_hands:

Update for Reference:

Uninstalled Avira Security (issue still present)
Uninstalled Adobe Acrobat Reader (issue still present)
System upgraded to Win11 (in-place upgrade not clean install), (issue still present)
Fully Uninstalled Roon & RoonServer (database and settings removed)
Installed Roon ver. 1325 clean not added any services or music folders.
Roon automatically upgraded both to 1455 production. ISSUE Still Present! Unbelievable at this point!
