Thanks for the screenshots and for the detail about the Unraid setup, that last part turned out to matter more than we expected. We pulled a fresh set of Roon Server logs and went through them, and there are three separate things going on.
First, a small mix-up on the screenshots.
The ones you posted are for Phantomime rather than Seven Inches of Satanic Panic. No problem at all, and there’s a silver lining, because Phantomime is actually grouped correctly on our end, so it gave us a clean example of what “working” looks like.
When you have a minute, could you run Edit → Identify Album on the copy of Seven Inches of Satanic Panic that’s named exactly that, with no “[Restored]” and no vinyl-rip suffix in the title? You have several copies of that 7" in your library, and that particular one is the odd one out. A shot of its Versions list would help too.
Second, the duplicate metadata record is confirmed.
Your logs backed up what I described last week. There really are two separate album entries for that 2019 7" on our metadata provider’s side. Most of your copies are attached to one entry, and one copy is attached to the other. The two entries share several of the same underlying releases, which is exactly why the album disappears from the Ghost artist page but still turns up if you go in through the discography and open Versions, that view follows the shared releases and pulls both sets back together.
I’ve sent the specifics to our metadata team to get their thoughts on the issue, and if it’s something we’re able to signal to our upstream providers to try and get the two entries merged. There’s nothing for you to do here, and to reiterate the frustrating part: no amount of rescanning or re-identifying would ever have fixed it, because nothing is wrong with your files or your library.
Third, and I want to walk back what I said earlier about the drive.
I suggested checking the USB cable and whether the enclosure was spinning down. Having now looked at eight straight days of logs, I don’t think that’s it, and I’d rather correct myself than send you chasing hardware.
The SABRENT volume never dropped once while Roon Server was running. Not a single mid-session disconnect in eight days. The enclosure and the cable look fine.
What is happening is a startup timing problem. Roon Server restarted nine times in that window, and on three of those restarts the drive wasn’t mounted yet when Roon came up. Two of those were on August 14th, and Roon ran for about 26 minutes and then another 14 minutes seeing only your Qobuz albums, with your local library unavailable the whole time. That’s the “my library shrank” effect you’ve been seeing. On the third restart the drive was there and everything came back normally.
So the container is starting before Unraid has finished mounting the drive underneath it. A few things that should sort it out:
- If you’re using Unassigned Devices, launch the Roon container from its mount script rather than letting Docker autostart it. That guarantees the drive is ready first.
- Failing that, set a start delay on the Roon container in Unraid’s Docker settings.
- When you’re stopping and starting the array, like during the SFTP work you mentioned, stop the Roon container first and start it last.
One thing to avoid: if the mount ever resolves to an empty folder rather than being properly offline, Roon will scan it, find nothing, and remove those albums from your library. Roon handled it correctly on the 14th and kept everything in place, but the start-ordering fix is what keeps you out of that situation entirely.
One last thing, and this may be the more useful finding.
Around 2,200 albums in your library are currently sitting unidentified, and that number hasn’t moved in over a week. That’s separate from the Ghost issue, but I suspect it’s behind some of the other gaps you noticed, unidentified albums group poorly, which is why they tend to go missing from artist pages. It also fits your observation that EPs and singles are the worst offenders, since short releases give the identifier the least to work with.
If you can point me at two or three more albums that are behaving oddly, I’ll check whether they’re the same duplicate-entry pattern or something we can clear up in one go.
