Screen just keeps saying "waiting for roon server" Need Urgent Help - never happened in this system before

Hello. My system involves a Sonore Ultra Rendu, and a Small Green Computer Sonic Transporter. I have never experienced this issue before. I have rebooted Roon on my iPad repeatedly. I have power failed the Sonic Transporter many times, I have restarted Roon server on the Sonic Transporter, many times, with no change. The software was just updated on the Sonic Transporter, but that has never caused the issue before. Please help, I’ve been without music for two days trying to troubleshoot this.

Hi @Jeff_Corbin,

Thank you for your post and we’re sorry to hear you’re in this situation.

The machine and server instance are both online and responsive to our diagnostic log requests, which is a good first sign. Logs from the server only extend the last day or so - have you recently reset your RoonServer from scratch, or restored a Backup?

Can you clarify whether you’re referring to RoonServer (updating to 1528, the most recent version) or the firmware on the Sonic Orbiter itself?

Please share a basic description of the network topology involved here, including the router and any switches that serve the Sonic Orbiter and the Ultra Rendu endpoint.

Logs show that the iPad and Sonic Orbiter are on the same subnetwork, but the connection request from the server to the iPad is being refused. If you are running iOS 17/18 or above, try ensuring that Roon has local network access in the iPad settings page.

  • Open Settings on your iPad.
  • Scroll down to find Roon in the list of apps.
  • Tap on Roon.
  • Make sure the toggle for Local Network is turned ON.

We’ll watch for your response. Thanks!

Thank you for your assistance with this. In the interim I was working with Andrew, the owner of Small Green Computer. He was kind enough to take the time to try to resolve the issue, At his request, I downloaded Anydesk and let him control the pc, in an effort to resolve the issue. He (unfortunately) deleted my existing Roon software and downloaded a new version from Roon, which I assume must be 1528?). He disconnected, saying everything was fixed, however, my initial problem has not changed at all.

iPad software version is 15.7 (it’s an older, Pro model)

I have gone into the iPad and verified that Local Network is turned on.

The router involved is a high end Asus model. Approximately a year old. There are no switches.

Hi @Jeff_Corbin,
I noticed in your account that you also have a Windows remote. I assume that one doesn’t have any issues since you don’t mention it. So let’s focus on the iPad. Let’s start with some basic troubleshooting.

  • Restart the iPad.
  • Reinstall the Roon app on your iPad.

Let us know how things go after trying those steps.

Thanks Daniel. I never even knew I had a Windows remote, much less tried to use it. I will focus on reinstalling Roon on my iPad. Hopefully that does the trick. I will report back.

Daniel,

I’ve reached another impasse. I did reinstall the Roon app on my iPad, specifically Roon Legacy. It installed as version 1.8. In setting things back up within Roon, it shows a mismatch between the software level between my devices. 2.0 for the Sonic Transporter server and 1.8 for the Roon app on my iPad. It directs me to Ron Labs FAQ concerning Roon 1.8 ↔ 2.0 Migration. It essentially says to upgrade to 2.0. In the App Store, it only shows one option to install the Roon Legacy Remote, and it only downloads version 1.8. I’m a bit lost.

Hi @Jeff_Corbin,
When we went from Roon 1.8 to 2.0 we changed the architecture of the app. If you just search for Roon in the app store you will find the app that you need. It’ll have the standard Roon icon of black text saying roon on a white background.

Hello Daniel. I had thought we were well on the way to get this resolved, but not as easily as hoped. I went to the Apple app store, and found the version of Roon that you identified above. It claims that I updated to that a week ago, and it does appear as an icon in my iPad? I’m baffled as I didn’t download it a week ago, as I could not even get anything to connect at that point. At any rate, the app IS there, and was somehow downloaded, and pressing the 2.0 icon still results in the “not being able to find a Roon server” message that started this whole thing.

What really has me confused is that the icon for the 1.8 version of Roon Remote legacy which is still on my iPad, from our previous discussion. If I press that button, Roon still does see my system and even asks me to select the Sonic Transporter as my Roon server. Of course, you cant get much beyond that because of the version mismatch.

So, again, I’m a bit lost as to what to do next. Also, the App store doesn’t appear to allow me to reinstall the 2,0 version, it only gives me the option to open it?

iPads have automatic updates of the apps in (and installed from) the App Store

Uninstall and then reinstall it.

Sorry to hear, I am not a technical guy. May I suggest and in my respectful opinion, try unplugging simultaneously each physical unit in the entire chain for a couple of minutes including your router and any switches. Having waited a few minutes start plugging them back in one at a time in a proper chronological order starting at the router ending with your Roon server. Prior to plugging each one back in one at a time leave a few minutes to allow each device to power up appropriately. Hopefully, this suggestion proves fruitful.
