Search on ipad: cannot clear search box without backspacing to delete each of the letters

I raised this as a bug. This behaviour on iOS is extremely odd and user unfriendly. No other search box on any UI behaves like this. The cross is supposed to clear the entered text but instead closes the search box.

In 1.8 if you have text already in the search box, the cross should clear it. This does not happen and tapping on the cross closes the search box instead.
