Setting up backup to Synology NAS

I had to reinstall my software and lost the path to my still-existing backup, which is in the root of my Synology NAS, called “Roonbackups”. I’m trying to set the path to it in roon and failing in the add network share window.

I get “Unexpected error: Invalid network path”. Any tips on what the proper path is? The Synology is at 192.168.x.x.

Thanks for any help!!

What exactly did you enter? Screenshot?

You will also have to include not just the IP address but the name of the share as well, which depends on what you set up:

Actually, its “roonbackup”

Stupid question, but the IP address is correct? Can you access that share in the file browser of your computer?

Huh, I got this. Sorry to be a noob

It looks like you are trying to access the NAS in a web browser. I meant in the file browser/manager, i.e., File Explorer on Windows or Finder on Mac.

  • From a Windows PC
    – Open File Explorer
    – Enter in the address bar of File Explorer:
    \\192.168.4.48\roonbackups

  • From a Mac
    – Open Finder
    – Press Command + K
    – Enter into the new popup window:
    smb://192.168.4.48/roonbackups

yes that works

here’s what I get in roon

Weird. Next stupid question: username and password are correct? Did you have to use any when accessing the share from your computer’s file manager?

no stupid questions and thank you. it lets me sign on as a registered user or a guest using finder

Hm. What if you try guest in Roon?

I also note that the error has changed. Now it says “There was an unexpected error: Unexpected error”, earlier you wrote "Unexpected error: Invalid network path”

What is your Roon Core?

its ROCK running a nuc. I rebooted and then tried guest and then no name and then my name and password; it thought about it and then gave unexpected error

Thry these steps:

Notes:

  • Your password seems to be very long (maybe too long?, may contain special characters too?)
  • Make sure your NAS is set to allow SMB 2 connections
  • I still believe that Roon Labs dropped SMB 1 support for ROCK (but still have no hard evidence), so make sure you don’t rely on it

roonbackup or roonbackups , check it .

its roonbackup; I checked
NAS is set up; I was doing roon backups till today and then lost the setup when I had to reinstall roon

no special characters in password btw

Did you try just using the back slashes instead of smb ? My core backs up to a Synology NAS.

Good point, my ROCK backs up to a QNAP and my remote is a Mac, and it also shows backslashes

airdronian, didn’t help. Puzzled.

maybe roon support ??

If nobody has an idea  but not today and it will probably be a while until they get to this thread

thanks all. smb is enabled btw!

what drives me nuts is that I HAD IT WORKING but cannot remember what I had entered!!!
