· The Nucleus boots up and I can connect to it in the Roon app without issue, but I have a question about configuration/storage/attached devices

Describe the issue

I have a Nucleus Rev. B+ with 2 TB internal storage wired to a router and connected to my main system; it works fine. I want to add a Nucleus One to a second system on another floor of my house. That system has a Linksys wireless extender, wirelessly connected to the main router. Can I set up the Nucleus One by wiring it to the extender, or must I wire it to the main router to set up, and then move it to the other floor? Another question: do I even need the One on the other floor? Or can I stream from the Rev. B+ by connecting the second system's integrated amp to the wireless extender and selecting it as another "zone" from the Roon App? Thanks for help!

If you can connect the second system integrated amp to your existing network either by ethernet or WiFi, you do not need to buy a second Nucleus. Your existing Nucleus Plus will be able to stream to the second system as a different zone.

However, I would try to avoid the use of Wi-Fi extenders. If your routers WiFi signal will not reach the new system, a better alternative would be to add an additional access point in a position where it can be wired to your router but still provide a WiFi signal to the new system. If your router can be extended to be part of a mesh system all the better but you should still endeavour to use a wired connection between the mesh node and the primary router. Make sure any new mesh node is configured as a node and not the primary router.

Hey @Peter_Goodrich,

Good to see you on the community again!

@Wade_Oram is 100% correct in the above response - many users are successful in a multi-floor Roon ecosystem, all using a single server (or in your case, Nucleus.)

This is accurate and correct as well - wifi extenders typically lead to network trouble and headache. Avoid wifi as much as you can in regards to hi-res audio playback (much easier said than done we realize.) :slightly_smiling_face:

Hope this helps and keep us posted on how things go! :+1:

Thanks very much, Wade and Ben! That clarifies things. Running ethernet through two floors isn’t feasible, but if I can get one Nucleus to network in both systems, then I’m good. Perhaps a mesh upgrade is also in order.

Peter

Mesh systems alone are not always the answer. You need to make sure you set them up properly.

Ideally, you should use a wired ethernet connection between nodes. If this is not possible, you may be able to mitigate the WiFi issues that can arise by using a Tri-band system. That way you can have one band dedicated to backhaul and use the other two for connecting devices such that the internode traffic does not interfere with the node to device traffic.
