Show Us Your IEMs and Earbuds

There is a show us your headphones thread but IEMs and earbuds don’t seem to be getting much love from the Roon Community, so let’s change that.

Here is my current collection of IEMs (my earbuds will be featured in another post).

A few notes:

I mostly use IEMs (and earbuds) for my train trips into NYC and some late-night listening when I don’t want to wear full size headphones while lying in bed.

In the photos below I show each IEM along with the carrying case and the USB-C to 3.5 mm single ended connection dongle. These dongles are so inexpensive (from $10 for the Anker up to a massive $25 for the FiiO KA11) that I decided to get one from each IEM so they are all ready to go. All the dongles sound very good, handle even high resolution (24bit/192kHz) flac files and provide enough power to play really LOUD.

Shown from least to most costly.

Case: $5, dongle: $10 and the Linsoul 7Hz x Crinacle Zero: 2 IEMs, which were around $20. For around $30 the sound cannot be beat!

Case: included with the IEMs, dongle: around $13 and the Linsoul SIMGOT EW300 HBB IEMs around $70. These IEMs are a big step up for the Zero:2’s with a very full bass and nice highs.

Case: $7, dongle: $16 and the Linsoul Kiwi Ears x Crinacle Singolo IEMs: $80. Similar price and performance to the Simgot IEMs above. These under $100 IEMs are great for travel since if they get lost or stolen one is not out too much money. I now travel with a Chromebook for the same reason, less money than either a laptop or iPad so a lot worrying about loss or theft.

Case: $7, dongle: $10 and an old set of Westone IEMs that I purchased (and used) back around 2005. I believe that they cost around $300, which in 2025 dollars is around $300,000  still sound pretty good although the two IEMs above are a much better choice.

Case: the original case for the Westone IEMs above, dongle: $30 and the Westone Mach 80 IEMs. These are Westone’s flagship IEMs and they sound wonderful with silky smooth highs and deep, punchy bass. With a list price of $1,600 (often available at deep discounts) i tend to use these IEMs for critical listening while at home.

Well that’s my current IEM collection. How about yours?

Good thread. I haven’t got photos, but currently have 3 pairs:

  1. Truthear Zero Red with Linsoul Tripowin Zonie 16 cable (my main pair)
  2. Truthear Zero Blue with stock cable
  3. 7Hz Zero with stock cable

I’ve got an Apple USB C Dongle and a Fosi Audio DS2 DAC Dongle.

I suspect I’ve got a pair of Truthear Nova’s coming my way for my upcoming birthday

The 7Hz IEMs don’t seem to suit my ears. I’m better with Truthear, fit-wise.

Just like headphones, no IEM fits right for everyone and the right fit is important both for comfort and for sound quality. If one were to take a deep dive into all things IEM then getting a custom fit pair of IEMs becomes the goal. I’m not there (yet).

30€ Salnotes Crinacle Zero:2 with 2€ no name memory foam tips thru a 10€ iNassen hirez dongle with charging connector via 0€ USB Audio Player Pro.

Actually wanted to replace my ages old and literally falling-apart Shure SE425 for either Sennheiser’s IE600 (650€ - ugh) or IE900 (1300€ - ouch) after auditioning them, but just had to buy the insanely cheap and well measuring Zero:2’s after seeing the measurements.
I didn’t compare directly, but would say they easily match or even trump (should I still use that expression these days?) the Sennheisers, can’t be happier!

I will admit I dont understand IEMs. Do they offer anything headphones dont other than the obvious?

Smaller in size, making storage and transportation easier. Also being more discreet I suppose is a plus too.

IEMs are all about getting the right fit and a good seal with the proper tip. some of the features of IEMs:

  1. Several db of passive noise reduction
  2. Very immersive sound
  3. Portability due to their compact size
  4. Wide range of prices, with even less expensive (under $100) IEMs offering very good sound. And the sky is the limit for the more expensive IEMs

May I suggest that you pick up one of the highly rated (YouTube is good source for IEM reviews) less expensive IEMs and give them a try, who knows you might even enjoy and like them :+1:

I own a pair of Meze 109 Pro’s currently. Can IEMs sound better for less? If anyone can recommend some for around £150 I will take a punt.

Not everybody likes the feel of IEMs as they sit in the ear canal.

With your Meze 109 Pro’s do you listen to the stock or do you equalise them?

I listen to music on Ultimate Ears IEM’s which are custom made to measure by sending in impressions of your ear canal from an audiologist. For years I listened on Pro 18 +, I now listen on Premium https://pro.ultimateears.com/pages/ue-premier

Stock.

I’m a speaker guy 99% of the time and my headphones are played less than an hour a month.

Based on the fact that you don’t use headphones all that often, the only reason to try an IEM would be if you needed the portability provided by an IEM. I would say stick with the Mezes.

Not a big fan of over or on ear headphones, so IEMs are all I will use, and then only when I’m out and about.

For when I care:

Sennheiser IE200
GUCraftsman cable
Dunu tips
Dragonfly Cobalt
USB Audio Player Pro on a Pixel8 Pro (because PRO  )

For when I don’t care (which is most of the time):
Pixel Buds Pro2 (more PRO!)
Whatever on the same Pixel8 Pro

My faves right now, in order; 2024/2025 has really upped the price/performance ratio! The freedom to listen to very high reproduction quality and move around freely is invaluable to me

SONY WF 1000 MX4 bought originally to get music after a neck operation when conventional headphone wouldn’t fit over the dreaded collar

Surprisingly good and still get used where overears look wrong, waiting rooms etc

Iem’s will drive you mad searching for perfection

Audeze isine20’s
Fiio FH5s
Final B3
7hz Timeless Tripowin cable
Kinera Celest Wyvern black
Aful Magic One
Oriveti Lowmaster

All acceptable with the Mojo2 but The Fiios 4.4 blanaced and the 7hz 3.5m sound awesome on their own with my Sony NW zx507

If one spends any time on the Head-Fi forums then one knows just how vested into the search for perfect IEM some people are. Happy hunting!
