Shuffle question - how come?

When shuffling within 10’s of 1,000’s of tracks Roon does great.

Every now and then it will Shuffle within an album.

It will go from 1 track to another for awhile then it gets to a folder/show/album and then shuffles within that.

The Queue lists the album and then will say something like “24 parts” next to it.

When this happens I goto edit the album… I turn off multi part compositions and tell it it’s not a compilation with hopes if it ever stumbles on that album again that it will not do that (not even sure if doing that addresses the issue) …

I just don’t get it and wish I knew why, it wouldn’t change anything but want to know.

Even if it was a compilation or multipart composition why would it do that???

Still wondering, would love to know why?

Will what I am doing when I edit the album change anything?

Thank you

Hi @thomas_clark1,

When a multi-part composition comes up in shuffle, all parts of the work are played. This is by design and there is no way to change this behavior in Roon.

Turning off multi-part compositions as you’re doing will cause Roon to view these tracks separately and will cause the tracks to not be played all together in the shuffle.

thx for your response nice to know what Im doing will help this.

Still can’t make it work why anyone in their right mind would consciously design it to do this.

Thx again

The short answer is to keep individual movements of a work always being played together. This is a “right-minded” approach although it does have some bad side effects. For example, if the shuffle happens to include one track of, say, an opera, you’re gonna hear the whole thing. On the other hand, a symphony will always be heard in its intended order and scope.

If you are looking for an explanation of their code, my guess is it won’t happen.

I encourage you to make a feature request. But you should probably avoid calling the designers crazy.

Upon review of my communications the 1st use of “crazy” did not come from me.

In my mind the use of shuffle across multiple albums is to avoid the work being played together.

If i wanted that I wouldn’t click "shuffle "

You implied they weren’t “in their right mind.” Just sayin…

I had a detailed discussion with Mike about this. I argued that a user get an option for shuffling to either ignore or maintain groupings. We also talked about shuffling playlists, where one could declare a particular playlist to be group-free.

I tried to persuade him/them that there were numerous compositions, such as a collection of etudes, that may be grouped for presentation purposes but downright painful to listen to all tracks in one sitting.

But in the end, there was no consensus reached, and I don’t think this “feature” has made it to their roadmap.

BTW, there is an extension (Random Radio) that does ignore groupings, but it’s quite basic, e.g., no confining to a particular set of tracks or albums.

I meant “bat shit insane”…

Just sayin
