Normally i’d chalk this up to taste and opinion, but these suggestions seem so far off as to make me think there’s something wrong. The band in question is “Poor Man’s Poison”, generally a kinda Folk/Bluegrass/Country-esque band. They’ve got one album tagged in Roon as pop/rock (probably should be folk too? that’s what it seems to be elsewhere, e.g. last.fm), but otherwise their music is tagged as country in Roon (this matches up roughly with other services).
However, their “Similar artists” appear to be mostly punk/metal/screamo/grunge in Roon:
Thank you for the report. We can reproduce this in-house reliably.
Here’s what we’ve confirmed is happening:
There’s no genre data associated with this performer in our indexed data
Recommendations subsequently are based upon a) new releases otherwise recommended by your Tidal account or b) the sparse metadata that we do have available for this band, which includes a cover of a song by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame (probably explaining the metal/screamo suggestions)
We’ll pass this along to the team and determine why the metadata isn’t populated correctly from MusicBrainz, where genre tags are available for this artist.
idk if it’s entirely related (slightly different circumstances), but i i’ve noticed musicbrainz info not populating through for a number of albums & artists – for instance, “Sake of the Sound” by Front Country is tagged as americana, country, folk pop, indie folk, popin musicbrainz, but in Roon it only shows the (pretty useless) AllMusic Pop/Rock designation & Roon Radio gets pretty confused.
i’ve submitted a correction to allmusic for Sake of the Sound, but i’ve noticed this for a quite a few bluegrass albums – for instance, “Coming Down the Mountain” by Mipso and “Fifteen” by The Wailin’ Jennys both have a proper tag in musicbrainz, but it doesn’t show through in Roon.
(at least for front country, however, the artist info in AllMusic is more complete, so related artists are fine there)
