Sluggish performance over time on Roon ROCK v2.7 (build 1671)

All the info is in this active thread

I’ve automated a 7am shutdown and 7:30am reboot on my Synology housing the core. I found that when there is a power cut when I’m away this also reboots the NAS at the set time so I don’t come hom to a music outage

Now, apart from new albums still not showing spontaneously, the whole thing stays pleasantly fast.

Context: Roon core and music on a four-bay Synlogy 420+ with 10Gb RAM and a 480Gb M2 as memory cache.

I have a Roon Rock on a 11th gen NUC with Core i7 and 16GB memory. I have 44K tracks and a LOT of high resolution albums.

Roon has been slowing down the last 6 months. This latest build it has slowed down massively. It can be 10 second to start to play an album, I suspect even longer sometimes. Even when I reboot, it gets sluggish after only about 15 minutes.

It would be great if you could fix this issue.

Hi @Tuckers

I would not expect to see this slow down if you have only 44K tracks (despite having a lot of HiRes albums). My suggestion would be for you to open a Tech Support Request so that the team can take a closer look at your system.

To equip the Roon Technical Support team to assist you directly, please follow this link to provide the details of your case to Technical Support: Technical Support Request

Respond to the prompts there to ensure that you’ve performed basic troubleshooting and to ensure Technical Support has the full details necessary to expedite Technical Support’s investigation into the case.

Your responses will create a ticket in Roon Lab’s support tracking system and auto-generate a Community thread in the appropriate section.

Because this Community thread will be in a public forum, please do not include any personal information, such as your email address, postal address or telephone number in your submission.

Thank you.

I generally agree with everyone here. I also see sluggish performance after a couple of days and rebooting my Nucleus one provides relief. With that said, I don’t like the idea of a server being off for periods of time…

You may have to do some searching here on the forum, but someone here created an automation using the Home app on his iPhone that I can confirm works wonderfully for what the OP is asking for.

It’s essentially scheduling a restart by calling the web interface described above.

As long as Roon won’t build in automated restarts, this is a fine fallback solution.

Let’s hope they’ll deliver a real fix for that, soon. Everything else is a workaround for a rather embarrassing bug with a premium price tag.

For years, Roon just worked. Now it just fails. I’m not a persistent complainer about anything else but my music playback. If I can’t listen to music without dropouts, complete stoppages, software refusing to boot, and having to visit diagnostics pages, then _ you’re going to hear from me. I quite recently renewed my Roon membership for another year - a move I regret.

Today, I downloaded P.S. Audio’s Maestro streaming app. So far, so good. Apparently, Maestro can access music on my Nucleus+ and it hooks up to Qobuz. I’ve done the Qobuz setup and will connect to my Nucleus tomorrow. Above all, music played through Maestro sounds darned fine. Unless they get their act together pronto, I may end up walking away from Roon - sad to say.

Hi @Community_User

I saw you created a support request, did you see the responses from and Vadim and Noris. Roon support want to help but they require some information from you in order to track down the issue on you system.

The topic has long since auto-closed, but you can request it to be reopened … please submit a reopen support request via the technical support help form below and specify that the issue should be reopened.

Alternatively let me know and I can open it.

I am having a similar issue with my Nucleus Titan. Slow to start a session - like 30 seconds or more. The UI is slow to load between pages and I have to wait 10-30 between each song for the next tune to play. If I reboot, everything runs fine for a few sessions then back to the sluggishness.

For my Mac Mini running Roon Server I wound up using the built-in Shortcuts app to build a script to restart Roon. Roon Server is not an app but it’s bundled in the Roon app. So, it’s necessary to search for it via Show Package Contents where RoonServer.app lives when building the shortcut. Once built I used Cron to schedule it to run at a safe time overnight, avoiding any Roon backup or other activities. So far it works and I’ve had smooth sailing everyday since.

Agreeing to all mentioned.

In addition, my ROON gets extremely slow when I open the app. What’s up with that? Regardless of what I do with it. It sometimes deteriorates the playback to radio crackle, at the highest possible rate I’m sure  Turning the app off works a few times but then I’m also back at least to daily reboots.

My usage is very simple. No super large lib. Mostly single end point streaming. Using i5 ROCK over specced like some of you have as well. Always running latest version. Wired connection to router and some end points, but the issue doesn’t discriminate between wired vs non wired. Nothing in my setup changed for three years apart from my iPhone running the app. But other users with android have the same so we can rule that out :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I’d wait if the next update (hopefully in a few days) fixes it and if not, open a case in Support to get it looked at.

are you talking the Remote app on a tablet ?

I use an iPad Pro but the other day I put Roon on to a Samsung low spec tablet , it was sluggish compared with the iPad

Hi Mike,

remote app on Phone. I just had it again. Music is playing I start the app on my iPhone and boom. Stops.

My wife on her android. Same. It takes long to load the app (show the finding your system screen) then the playback stops.

When it launches it takes forever to view the playing list. It’s a real bummer (to the power of..)

the remote app hogs a lot of storage if you look in settings

A trick is to uninstall the app and re-install to clear memory .

It’s done this for years.

For me this is new behaviour. Been using it for many years now. Features improved but stability went down. The experience today is basically terrible. Beta level if that. I’ve even reinstalled ROCK to no avail

@DutchDuke - please open your own Support Request so that the support team can take a closer look at your system. Go to Support and click the ā€œGet Helpā€ button. Thanks.

Is this on 2.71 ?
