How do we make make Playlists work for compositions - not for tracks (which break compositions up into pieces) and not for albums.
I have tried to make a Compositions smart list using bookmarks, with a view to playing all my Baroque compositions not yet played on a random shuffle. However, when you go to focus for compositions, you cannot select any of the “played in the last…” options available for tracks or albums - they are not there.
I can make a smartlist which plays all of the Baroque albums or tracks in my collection that I have never played before on shuffle, but this breaks all the compositions or works into one track bites and in many cases will degrade the listening experience. This will be even worse for chamber music, or some other genres.
So it would be useful to ether have a smartlist option for compositions or works; or, in the my library/compositions focus section include all of the options which focus has for tracks or albums, especially including “played in the last…”.
(I should note that what I usually have been doing is going to Genres, and then Baroque (or etc) and then shuffle and play. But here there are no other focus options, and one often hears the same work again - BUT, at least, many works are played in total, not just one track here or there, before shuffling to the next composition.)
Please let me know if I have missed a trick here!!!
How many times do you want to listen to a composition? Roon’s compositions are “container objects” that contain recordings for compositions – often more than one. If you add a composition let’s say to the queue than all the contained recordings of that composition gets added to the queue. Is that the form of playlist you are looking for?
The various recordings are also the likely reason that there are no “played …” filters. You simply don’t play compositions but recordings (or parts thereof) in Roon terms.
This is a good point and yes, an issue. So, no, what I really want is to shuffle works, if that is understood as any full instance of any composition. It is true that I have many recordings of some compositions. This is a complication I had not thought of… thanks???
There simply is (currently) no list of recordings that could serve as basis for the feature you describe. You can use the pencil on top after the thread title to mark the thread as a feature request (and don’t forget to vote for it).
You can also post directly in the feedback thread Roon Labs created for the smart playlist feature:
thanks @carl for moving this to this thread. Although, as I suggest here, I’m not sure that it is smart playlists for compositions that I really want, so much as for “works”.
