Smart Playlists Feedback [Now released]

Hey Early Access,

Thanks very much for your feedback on Smart Playlists so far. We’ve already released a handful of improvements on SPLs thanks to your feedback. Notably a random sort order which makes these feel a lot more exciting. Also, SPLs should now respect banned albums and tracks.

If you haven’t yet tried Smart Playlists, give them a shot. See how they change the way you listen and organize your collection. We need your help to shape this feature, and we’d love to hear your ideas, experiences, and thoughts.

How to Create Smart Playlists
As a refresher, there are two ways to create smart playlists. One, start with a Tracks or Albums focus and save those filters as a dynamic, automatically updating Smart Playlist. Two, start from the + button on the sidebar and select “new smart playlist”. SPLs are based off of either tracks or albums.

Need inspiration?

Here are a few Smart Playlist ideas to get you started.

Rediscovery:

  • Recently added, never listened.
  • Indie rock from the 1990s.
  • Produced by Timbaland.
  • Albums released on Deutsche Grammaphon.

Organization:

  • Local music with no genre.
  • Sort me plz! Everything by “unknown artist”.
  • Deliciousness: 96k and above.

Designed for ARC:

  • Classical download: All local classical music.
  • Airplane Mode: Local music with label “Paris Trip”.
  • Car Shuffle: every album tagged “road trip tunes.”

Some guidance for testing:

• Do you find smart playlist setup intuitive?
• How do Smart Playlists change your music discovery or management process?
• What SPLs have you made? How have you made them? (share screenshots plz!)
• Are there specific features or improvements you’d like to see?
• How are you using SPLs in ARC? How does ARC feel with SPLs?

Happy testing!

It would be great if you could finally implement:

…this would truly match the Smart Playlist capabilities of other platforms.

Hello
is it possible to have a playlist for recently added ordered by date?
It would be wonderful because i cannot on my smartphone.

Would be good to be able to edit genre on mobile (Arc & Roon Mobile) so we can fix these.

The setup of the smart playlists is great but the feature itself isnt as useful as I can’t create them on mobile.

Genre filters on the smart playlists don’t allow you to select any (you can select but it doesnt do anything) which is THE feature I really want from them, I want to be able to create something like the daily mixes from spotify (blend of genres that go together).

Custom artwork would be great too.

It would be cool if the smart playlist for albums looked like Qobuz:

Smart Playlists depend on the available focus criteria. For me, one of the strongest criteria would be the freely selectable play count.
My daily listening routine is such that I put all new additions to the library into rotation until they have been played ten times. After that, they go into the normal library and I only listen to them when I feel like it. So far, I’ve done this by marking all new additions to the rotation as favorites until they’ve been played ten times. Then I remove them from the favorites. This has worked very well so far, but I have to manually mark the relevant tracks as favorites when they are added to the library or remove them from the favorites when they have been played often enough.
This would be easier with Smart Playlists if I could set the focus to “played less than ten times”.
For me at least, it would be a great benefit to be able to set a freely selectable play count in the focus.

That said, I think it’s fantastic that smart playlists are now possible in Roon, and I hope that they will become an even more powerful tool through more differentiated focus criteria.

:+1: Agree
Playcount is missing in Focus (SPL). It would sit nicely besides the existing “Played in the Last”.

Roon should/could also use the Playcount in their internal code for the Daily Mixes and Radio to reduce the repetetiveness that has been reported.
As far as i can see Roon also logs number of plays for streaming tracks not in library . .

any idea when SmartPlaylissts are comming to Production?

Much better now after the latest update. It had a tendency to play from the same album/artist in a row before. Not now.

Usually it’s a few weeks between a new feature appearing in Early Access and the production release, but predicting how long it takes to fix any bugs that are not yet known before testing is difficult.

The EA update from today is labeled a release candidate, and normally this means that it will be generally released soon if no new critical issues are found.

smart playlists are supposed to be in the version released today but I’m not seeing any changes in roon on any of my devices after installing the update and restarting. weird.

Restart your Roon server once more. This was reported by several people in Roon Software Discussion

Can someone explaine me what is the difference between smart playlist and bookmark ?

I have been using bookmark for a few years to create some smart list based on focus. So to me smart playlist seems to do the same as bookmark, If so Is Roon going to remove bookmark in futur update ?

Thanks

As this isn’t an Early Access topic anymore now that it was released:

All the same problems as Focus, extremely limited initial selection criteria. If what you want is based on the few it shows initially great, if not it’s useless. Even if you do this for simplicity up front please just add an ‘Advanced’ button that leads to a rule builder like any other actual smartlist function on competing players.

Roon… thanks so much for the new feature. I’ve been wanting this for a long time.

Is there any chance of adding record labels in the tracks focus so we can have label based playlists?
