Sometimes unable to merge artists

Description of Issue

As discovered in this discussion about a metadata issue, I sometimes cannot merge artists in my library.

The simplest way I can demonstrate this is as follows:

• search for “bono”
• select “Bono” and “Bonobo” → I see the merge artists button
• select “Bono” and “Mike Bono” or “Sonny Bono” or any of the others, and I don’t see the merge artists button

I can reproduce this both on the Mac and iPad Roon clients.

Is this a bug, or is there some logic as to when I can and cannot merge artists?

Incorrect link in review for Dry by the Durutti Column

I’ve just gone back through this thread and noticed that your copy of Dry is a Tidal album. Maybe you can’t merge Tidal artists with local ones? I can’t check because I don’t use Tidal.

Artists have to be in your library. Easiest way to confirm is to select the library icon, top right, after searching for Bono. Those that now appear can be merged.

Both Bono and Sonny Bono are in my library so I can merge them.

Thanks. That explains it, though interestingly if I put an artist in my library to do the merge, then remove the artist, the merge remains in effect, so I wonder why Roon places this restriction on merging in the first place.
